used to be that way, must have changed...I haven't paid attention for awhile. I know that when my dad had something happen to one of his Camaro's downtown ICBC wouldn't fix it because he wasn't supposed to be downtown with it in the first place.
From ICBC's website
Vehicles with collector plates are restricted to pleasure use only.
For most vehicles, insuring for pleasure use usually extends the insurance coverage for occasional travel to work or school. With collector vehicles, however, you may never drive to work or school.
it gets even worse for Vintage plates.

What is the bolt pattern on those old bugs. I may have some wheels for it that you may (or may not) like. Keeping with the vintage look. PM me if you are interested.

I think that I'll end up repainting or powder coating the stock rims to get the collector plate status. I don't think these ever had a nice set of rims from the factory. 15 X 4.5" with a 4 bolt (130 mm). Even the Sport Bugs of the day had pretty fugly rims.

I think I'd have a little trouble getting collector plates with that. But I wonder where Subaru got the idea for their engine???

Yeah, original stock colour. That light blue was one of my favourites when these cars were new anyway and it has to be a stock colour for collector plates.

That's what I thought. But could you have painted it a different color that was offered for the same year, or do they check your vin code number to verify body paint?

Just to check....you are not going to use this as a daily driver (ie. taking it to work or something) are you? Collector plates do not cover that type of driving.
Your paint only have to be stock appearing, as in no primer. I would pick a colour from that era however to make sure it is not questionable.
See the application form for more information. http://www.icbc.com/insurance/pdf/MV1425web1.pdf

It'll be the "toy" and I really want the cheap insurance of collector plates. I think it's a better investment in nearly stock condition too as they get more and more rare. Collector status does allow custom wheels that are "era correct" so it'll be getting some 8 spoke Enkei style wheels as probably it's only custom touch.

I would suggest you put them on after you get the plates just to make your life easier.

How are the floorpans? Since you are painting already I suppose they are alright?
I really want to get my hands on one of these before they are all rust bckets. I just have to here to store the damn thing for 10 years until I get a chance to work on it

A friend of a friend is going to paint it for me. He does the prep work at his place then rents a spray booth. Is $2000 a good deal?

Well, it's been a long time coming but I finally have some progress to report on the Bug. Yesterday it went away for paint. Hopefully it'll be done in a week or so. Then I'll be one busy boy putting everything back together. Here's a shot of the dash cover I picked up on eBay. It just glues with silicone right over the old messed up dash.
And here's a couple of pics of the stripped shell as it was shipped off for painting with the donor hood and rear deck lid.
I was really hoping I could have it together in time for Volksfest this weekend but no such luck. I'll be down at Gyro Park Sunday checking everyone else's VW's instead. |
