Far from Stock ???

They are more concerned with safety

Headlight, Taillights, seatbelts/airbags.

Also you must have a "Cat" on the car .... if you meet Cali requirements your car should be fine.

As the car is registered to you should have no problems

i currently live in the US and when I move up to Victoria for school, I was just thinking about keeping my US plates and US insurance. It seems like I wouldnt have to deal with all this BS then. Right? And if I ever moved up someday, Id probably want to go the same way just to avoid the hassle, if its legal.

After 3 months you must register the car with BC plates, that is the law, but they do not enforce it much. (but some cops are pricks and Victoria is a small town and they look for things like that.

You should have no problem as you are a student with a visa.

If you do keep your US plates/insurance your insurance company will give you a hard time and may cancel your policy. It happened to a friend of mine.

How would all this stuff work with British cars? I'm talking Astin Mini's, Healey's Etc. I'm pretty sure these don't conform with too many safety things, but since it's not a high performance car would they even give a crap?

i bought a civic fromt he states had to go through a couple of things before i could insure it here in BC. Go to customs to get the form 1 and pay all the taxes nesscessary, went to vehicle inspection, and then a provincial inspection. You can insure your car after the form 1 though. Oh yea and u have to take it to air care, my car was too low so they did an idle test onyl good for a year.

You are talking about collector cars over 15 years old there are some different rules ..... they are a lot easier if the car is stock.

hey guys,

my dad's dealership has begun importing cars on a regular basis from the US to Canada, and i am the person in charge of this.

as such I am now intimately familiar with the procedures associated with this.

if anyone has any questions on what is required, or what the procedure is, feel free to PM me. its honestly not as bad as one would think, and the fees arent that bad.

If anyone is interested in Importing an Eclipse into Canada, this is what I had to do. After bringing it across, they gave me 30-45 days to get it up to Canadian standards. The main thing was I had to install daytime running lights. That cost around $120. Also, the car had 2 very bald front tires so I had to replace those. I was hoping that would be it....nope.

The car's rear brakes were all but gone....the tint had to be removed, the alignment had to be adjusted and I think that is it. So basically it cost me another $1000 to fix up the car enough to have it legal in Canada. I didn't pay duty because the car was made in the US. I had to pay GST on how much I paid for the car and then PST when I had it insured.

You can successfully use the 15 year old rule. My buddy has imported two LHD RS Cosworth from the UK and Germany without issue.

Now.. to import a performance car from anywhere else there is ONE loophole and many of you have seen the result. There are a couple Escort Cosworths in town. They do not meet Canuck standards nor are they 15 years old.

The shells are Ford Motorsport "parts". The shells are imported here. The rest of the car is also bought abroad and shipped here. Then reassembled. The importing shell must not have a VIN stamped on it. If the car truly is a high performance automobile the manufacturer has homologated shells that are "parts" that you can access. That is the ONLY way to get a car in here that does not meet standards.

The 15 year old rule is easily done IF and only if the car is from a Commonwealth country (another "one the sly" comment from Customs). There are planty of LHD cars in the UK... make some calls.

ok i hope someone gets to read this now. im thinking of getting a friend to do a silvia conversion for me in the us then import it. cuz its a hell lot fukin cheaper.
he can get a banged up 240sx wit a salvage title (messed up front), then he can replace it with a jdm front cut, headlights, grill, hood and everything including the sr20. now im wondering, if i go ahead and give him the go to do that, would i be able to import it? considering its still insured as a 240sx in oregon just with an entire front modified. can u give me a pointer on this gwilo? i don't want to have to blow all d money on this then having it stuck at the border. and who should i contact if ur not sure about this

just make sure it's an 88 or earlier 240sx and you'll be fine.

edit- make sure it isn't one with automatic seatbelts- those are ineligible for registration in canada without modification.

they have 88 240sx's???im just worried about whether i can get it across when it has the mod on it (the jdm front cut). since the car right now is a front end that's completely fucked up and gone. so its perfect for putting on a new front cut.

i apologize, i was thinking of the 200 and 180...

you can probably bring across a 240sx with front end modification even in the RIV program, which means you dont have to worry about one 15 years or older, but i'd call them-

1-888-848-8240, option 1, option 2 lol

okay... the problem lies with the front end. you can change the hood and so forth, but NOT the bumper, because this is a structural part of the car.

essentially no matter what you do to it, it will be okay to come across the border, but when it's here it has to undergo both a federal and provincial inspection, and it may fail either, most like the federal.

i'd do the modifications here.
