Local Beef Jerky shops

There used to be a place on Fraser or Nanaimo...somewhere around there that made the best jerky in a variety of flavours. Anyone know if it's still around, and if not, does anyone have any good places to go for some great jerky?

Either beef/pork/salmon...anything. Let me know!

One of my co-worker makes them. $20 pound. Goood jerky! She got pepper, regular, salt, thai, garlic and chilli. I get her to mix it up for me thai/chilli yumm! No takoyaki : (

that place is on fraser and 26th I think. Should be called Bee kim herng? or something like that. Defintely the best beef jerky i've ever had. A bit pricey though as it runs $18 per pound.

InvisibleSoul 01-31-2008 03:23 PM

Yeah, Fraser and 26th. Bee Kim Heng.

eclipseman 01-31-2008 05:12 PM

Yeah, Jimmy's made good beef jerky.

So Bee Kim Heng is still around? Time to get some jerky. Thanks.

Look for South African Biltong (sp?) stores. One of the members here works for out of africa trading which carries it.

One more vote for Bee Kim Heng on Fraser. A little more expensive than the others, but made in front of your eyes and tastes much better.

I used to buy it from this Chinese South African dude growing up -- he made it himself at his butcher shop. Not sure if he is still in the butchering shop, but it used to be somewhere hidden around SW Marine b/w Oak and Cambie -- like, really hidden in industrial places.

Alternately, there is a place in N. Van on Marine called African Breese [SIC] which sells some -- tho I couldn't say if it is good or not.

Hmm, so I've decided to give some jerky Xmas gifts. Not sure but does anyone know if Bee Kim Heng is still there on Fraser and 26th? Don't want to make a trip if they are gone...

T&T sells some pretty yummy ones

It's pretty easy to make beef herky, just go out and buy your favorite meat,go purchase a smoker, marinate the meat in whatever flavour you like.

My friend does this every year when he comes home from hunting,he makes deer and moose jerky, best stuff around.

bcedhk 12-18-2009 02:42 PM

we are asian, smokers' is not a kitchen tool we acknowledge or will use (others include, big ovens, spatulas)

eclipseman 12-18-2009 03:56 PM

I would honestly make my own, however, Bee Kim Heng's is seriously phenomenal.

I just went by and they are still open. $19/lb...still the best in Vancouver as far as I'm concerned (other than the long forgotten Jimmy's).

I thought Asian jerky (typically a Singapore tradition) is either pork (ground or sliced meat) cut into fine layer and cooked over charcoal to get the taste.. vs American ones are marinated and dried/smoked, they are done with chunks of beef.

Honestly those are 2 different products.

asian jerky is already cooked after they are marinated. They put it into a big oven to cook it. They just put it over charcoal to just give it some burned ends and such to make it taste better
