After reading so many positive reviews here about Pink Peppercorn. My wife and I decided to visit them yesterday when certain commitments fell through.
When we arrived, it was still early, so we were the first customers inside. The elderly server who greeted and served us was very pleasant. Presented us with the specials of the day and engaged in some humourous chit chat.
Anyways on with the food. Since it was relatively early and I had a late lunch, we decided to skip appetizers and go straight to the entrees. For my wife, I ordered the Lobster Thermidor while I got the Salmon Wellington for myself (it was very well reviewed on bcrdukes blog). When the food arrived, we were thoroughly amazed at the generous proportions of food; and extremely glad that we didn't order appetizers. Here's some pictures to make you guys drool:
Salmon Wellington
Lobster Thermidor
While we would've loved to have tried their Tiramisu that night, we had so much problems finishing our entrees that we just surrendered. We'll be more prepared for our next visit.
Now the review: Food -8.5/10
Kind of torn regarding the rating for the entrees. If I was to divide each item seperately on each plate (ie. lobster + mash potatoes + veg), I'd have no problems giving each one a solid 9. However, each item was extremely rich and savoury. So by the time we were done with a third of the entree, the food felt kind of heavy. Therefore, while everything tasted fantastic, I'd have to dock some points for the combination; it could be better (certain things made perhaps lighter). Service - 9.5/10
The server was funny, attentive and very charismatic. Also got to meet Eddy and complimented him on his food. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience there. Value - 9.5/10
Hopefully this doesn't sound insulting. But when I saw the entrees, my first thought was: this must be the Anton's of seafood restaurants. For the price we paid ($27 for the wellington, $40+ for the lobster), the portion sizes simply exceeded our expectations. And at one point, I was wondering if I should just bring half of my entree home just so I could finish off the sides. In fact, I think that's exactly what I'll do next time I'm there. |

Glad you enjoyed it!
The servers, from what I understand, were ex-Cannery employees just like Eddy. They definitely know how to take care of their customers!

LOL sorry.
I only occasionally post a review of a restaurant I go to now and then. And even then, my reviews are a little bit more objectified than others.

| Tokachi Japanese Restaurant
This place is like a diamond in the rough. In the ghetto part of Surrey, heart of Whalley, YES Whalley 108th and KG, this authentic Japanese restaurant is tucked away in a little plaza.
Food - 8.5/10
Ordered the beef sashimi and oyster Motoyaki as I had eaten just an hour or so before. Friend ordered the salad, assorted tempura, and beef udon. Sashimi was very tender & soft. Very well prepared. Tempura was freshly deep fried, crispy and largely portioned and had a variety of vegetables not just one specific majority. Oyster Mototaki contained about 3 pieces medium size. Taste lacked a tiny bit of flavour, but was still delicious. Not too greasy. Beef udon, filled with tender pieces of beef with a hefty amount of noodles and came extremely hot.
Presentation - 9/10
Chef's did a fair job with the plate presentation. Everything was clean & crisp and seemed very precise.
Service - 7/10
Our server was nice and attentive who could understand / speak clear English as well. Although she could have asked us how everything was going after a couple of minutes and if we needed anything.
Price - 8/10
Nothing too pricey here. Price is moderately fair to the food served.

Tentatsu 7.5/10
Had the oyako don and kontatsu. Oyako don was good but it had way to much rice. Kontatsu was crispy and tasty.

Jellie-D's in Surrey.
Name is misleading as it was formerly a donut shop, and has been turned into a diner-type place by the new owners. Has $3 all-day breakfast (that looked decent), but my brother and I went for the $5 burger meal. Fries looked hand-cut, and the burger was hand-made and pretty good; not dry, and just the right amount of everything.
7/10 since the place is a little on the dirty side, and it does take a little time for your order (seeing as it's a small shop with one or two cooks).

The Reef on Main 7/10
I always thought it was a hipster place, probably is..They serve Jamaican cuisine.
Shared the Jamaican beef and veggie patties. Only decent. Pastry not particularly flaky and minced filling was bland. Girlfriend got the jerk chicken sandwich with salad. Pretty bland too. Ackee and Saltfish was very good. Almost too rich but a touch oily. Pedestrian service (a bit hasty) but friendly enough.

Pho Van on Fraser and 18th.
Always had #30 (used to be #24). Spring roll & BBQ pork on vermicelli. Never really got a chance to try other stuff on their menu, it's just that good.
The spring roll is crunchy on the outside and has this really flavorful stuffing inside which makes you want to go back and have more next time. The pork is pretty good as well. The vegetables there really adds some crunch and texture everytime you take a bite.
The only downside is on some days, the noodles/vermicelli are a bit soggy.
It's $7.75 before tax/tip.
I give it a 8.5/10.

Fassil Ethiopian Restaurant. 736 East Broadway, near Fraser street.
7.5/10.
Good: If you like eating meat together with sourdough bread, this is a place to try out. Big portions of lamb, chicken, beef, along with vegetable to wrap with a spongy textured bread called Injera.
Bad: Beer is not cheap at $5 each for domestic or foreign brands. No forks or cutlery. Washing your hands before and after a meal is a must. If you choose a dinner platter with meat stew, be prepared to get greasy hands when you put the meat stew into pieces of bread.
