Well that's a pretty subjective question. Look through the photos and decide. It's going on your body.

I'd think artists would sympathize a bit with your situation and hopefully be more likely to take it on.

i hope so. i know i could have bit the bullet, swallowed my pride and paid jesse but i just couldn't do it.. it was the principal of the matter and i can't support an artist like him.

ill report back with who i end up going with.

The following is an anonymous post from an anonymous Revscene member

Hey recently got my back done, its flaking a lot all over and its so - so itchy.
However it does not hurt or I am not sore, I have read the tattoo faq section but want some member advice.

I want to go lift some weights, would sweating be bad? If not I wouldnt mind going to the gym tomorrow and doing some workouts, but if it makes a difference I shall not.

When will the itch go away, and whats after flaking? The tattoo is done ?

I have a few more hours in the lower area but after that I should be complete, will I flake all over agian?

My main concern is what should I do now, and if im able to go to the gym.

Don't go to the gym for at least 2-3 weeks AFTER the itching goes away, IMO. If it's somewhere that wouldn't be touched, no problem. But on your back is a bad idea

@vancityguy - I don't know how many times I have posted artist recommendations in this thread but here we go again.

for portraits go see Donovan at Lady Luck Tattoo. That is who Rope Hope is referring all his portrait work to, as he is burnt out from doing so many. Rob is one of Canadas best at portraits and at tattooing in general.

a couple other options.
Art Godoy - Funhouse tatoo
Jesse young - Six gill tattoo

I would definitely not recommend Jesse Strong at Steveston for a portrait. He specializes in lettering and Americana traditional.

sucks you had a bad experience with Jesse. It is almost always the CLIENTS fault that the tattoo did not heal properly. You went to one of the best artists in Van, He knows what he is doing. I highly doubt he over worked you as he has some of smoothest shading around and has been tattooing for like 16 years or something like that. I have never seen a bad tattoo from him in the 10 years I have known about him. Just because other tattoos have healed fine doesn't mean squat. I have been getting tattooed for 14 years and almost every piece has healed differently. Also different areas of the epidermis heal differently.

I have bumped heads with him before and he can be stubborn. In the end I realized he was right and I should of listened to him.

it wasn't my fault. i told jesse before we even started my chest is by far the most sensitive area on my body in terms of being tattooed. i have been getting tattooed for nearly 17 years also, 100+ hours but none of that matters.

my chest wouldn't stop bleeding when i got home, it wept for 2 days, i couldn't wear a shirt cause it would stick to my shirt. all i did was gently wash the excess crap off so it wouldn't scab over really heavy and thick. after the 2 days it was painful as fuck for about a week. i really didn't even care about any of that, Jesse started saying my immune system, my "lifestyle" etc.. the fuck does he have the right to say that shit to me. for starters i was healing a tattoo when i saw him, healed one right after his and all was fine. secondly my "lifestyle" as he put it consists of no smoking for 8 years, no drugs or alcohol for nearly 6 years.

Jesse does good work no doubt about it but he has a huge ego. I even offered to split the hour with him, I was being reasonable and he was not.

I've never had a problem getting touch ups done in the past, never. I treat my artists good, always tip, show up on time, don't dick them around. Jesse fucked up here. Jesse will never admit any fault or assume any responsibility because his ego is so inflated. It would have been a hour or less of touch ups, the fact that i offered to split it with him would be a no brainer to any other reputable artist, even if Jesse truly believed it was my wrong doing..

Jesse made the whole situation awkward. He called me bitching cause I said my tattoo wept while a customer was in the shop. Honestly the dude is off his rocker. If you catch him on a off day you're fucked. You basically have to keep quiet, swallow your pride and eat shit to get stuff done with him. I bit my tongue throughout the whole process dealing with him. In the end my pride is worth more than getting the tattoo completed from him and I told him that, plus i got the satisfaction of putting him in his place without biting my tongue or holding back and frankly he deserved it.

Anyways thanks for the links. Art actually offered to fix up the portrait. Is he pretty top notch with them?

Getting my back tattoo'd i find to be a real pain the ass, cant sit on the couch always gotta be leaning forward, cant put cream in some areas so i gotta bug the wife.. The itching will go away, its really annoying and you wanna itch but try your best not to, youll thank yourself later. I usually take 2 weeks off from going to the gym but i do play hockey 1-2 days after getting tattoo'd but i wear a shirt to help protect my skin but really i shouldn't be.
Every time you get tattoo'd it will flake and itch! This is why i like to go for 4-6hr sessions so its all itchy at once.

Nice man, I've seen some amazing portraits from Art. He loves doing very detailed intricate pieces. Him and his twin bro are world renowned for skateboarding, tattooing and tattoo machining skills. I've seen quite a few local artists go by Funhouse to get their tattoo machines tuned up. Jeff Tam was in there when I was getting a piece done.

Its kinda funny cuz him and Jesse use to work together way back when Art first opened up shop.

Thinking about it more you are right he should of just fixed the tattoo. One bad experience can ruin a artists rep. Thats the problem with tattooing its still not really a truly professional trade/career as it is so loosely regulated. It wasn't that long ago when it was still dominated by the biker outlaw type crowd.
