I would like to know if anybody other than Jeff @ monkey kind specializes in traditional Japanese style. Seems most guys portfolio including backwater isn't the traditional traditional type.

I never thought I would say this but I discover some really really good japanese traditional tattoo artist in china and I'm think of going to them on my next trip to china, they definitely undercharge their talent. Some of their work can rival alot of the artist in japan. Still looking for the next shige or jun cha

Shoko Sonoda
http://www.sumiya.ca/japanese.html

She did a traditional style tattoo apprenticeship in Japan under a Horimono Master. She later fled to Canada as she was fearing for her safety.

From her website her work looks about average to me. Nothing wow about it. Might be different in real life thou.

Anyone get a work done by her here?

You're right, the pics on her site are horrible. But it looks like pretty solid traditional work to me. If that's what you're into, she'd be a better choice than monkey king IMHO

A full sleeve on average takes around 25-30 hours. I would say about 5-8 hours for outline. Who will be doing the work??

Ya, both those guys are real nice. Especially the first one. Seems like everyone is on that Filip Leu/Shige neo Japanese style these days.

I think I have decided to bite the Bullet and try to get on Aaron Bells wait list at slave to the needle in Seattle. Dude has been one of my favorites for a out 10 years. Plus Seattle is only a short drive or 4 hours on the bus/train.

Not a fan of his work. You can get better work done cheaper in Vancouver.

4 hour drive, plus seat time, plus hotel stay, plus gas, etc. Going to cost you way more then just finding a good local artist. But if he's someone you really like then go for it cause your going to be the one who has to live with it.

The second guy quote 6000rmb for a sock sleeve (knee and under) which is very reasonable. Not bad at all. The first guy probably charge a bit more since he is more well known. Of course u also have the travel expense. Both shanghai and Beijing and not the cheapest city in china to visit.

About 900 bucks CAN for a full sock sleeve is really cheap, but the travel expenses would totally kill the savings. You should ask them if they are going to do any trade shows in North America. You should see if you can do a group buy all they really need is a clean work space to do their work. If you can find enough people he might consider coming here to do some work.

^^ imo the problem isn't that the mainlander tattoo artist don't want to travel, it is that is it not so easy for them to get visa to travel outside of china.

Them being basically stuck in china is also the reason why they undercharge compare to other top level artist elsewhere. their customer base is 99% from china with the rare 1% of foreigner who take the trouble to travel to them (vesus say going to japan)

6000rmb is like 2-3 month wage in china for most middle class folks. tattoo is still quite taboo in china, i doubt there are many serious tattoo collector from the upper class. Even rock stars in china don't rock much tattoos.

for real?? not a fan?? He can do just about anything from Japanese to killer Portrait work. But I guess different strokes for different folks.

Who do you think is better/comparable in and around Vancouver.

Only two people I would say come close are Steve Moore and Rob Hope. Neither do much Japanese work tho. I was on Rob Hopes wait list for a while but most of his japanese work doesn't look Japanese enough for me. If that makes any sense lol.

I would also like some work from Kurt Wiscombe but he is out in Winnipeg.
I guess I should really wait until I am financially secure enough to be able to travel easily for good work. I can hardly go 6 months to a year without getting in the tattoo chair tho!

Anyone else think the koi/dragon tattoo is going to be the new tribal/barbwire armband for this era?
