Uh, it's a diesel, it's got GOBS of TORQUE. At really, really low RPMs. It's not made for drag racing, it doesn't need lots of HP.

Looks nice, probably awesome off-road... wish they're Canadian-importable. Pretty much the SUV I'd buy if I was into SUV's.

I've heard nothing but complaints from people who have tested it. It looks good, but costs too much, and is less practical than a standard 90.

It's also ironic, because the things that make it cool to the english (soft top availability with zippers and snaps, external roll cage, etc etc) were already available to us since all the NAS (North American Spec) Defenders came with them.

Also, the company contracted to build the external roll cage on the soft top SVX is generally recognized as building a better version for the 60th Anniversary.

EDIT: You can bring Defenders into Canada under the 15 year rule. Its not like they've changed much...

yes i know

it probably has 300-350 pounds of torque, bu 110 hp isnt gonna get anywhere, it will have problems merging on the hwy

350 pounds of torque 200hp would make more sense for this car

It's actually a 2.4L turbodiesel making 122 horsepower and 270 lb-ft, and that's enough. It's not a high performance vehicle, by any stretch. It's a relatively new powerplant for the Defender, stolen out of the Euro-issue Ford Puma.

Mine is rated at 75 horsepower at the crank when it was new, but its generally accepted that they only put between 40 and 55 horsepower to the ground... and I can still merge without a real problem.

EDIT: I'm not a fan of the SVX; you could never take it off road. I'd take one of these:

or a 110 double-cab for expedition work

But of course, I have testicles, so I'll stick with my leafer.

In real life, most people have trouble sorting Defenders from old Series Land Rovers. The body styles are incredible similar.

Land Rover Defender 90:

Land Rover Series III:

Really, the Defender was truly an evolution of the Series trucks.

Ever heard of a Hummer?

Even if it were the most capable off road vehicle, that is bloody expensive, and look at what you are getting.

A) Hummer's dead... unless of course you mean the H2 or H3? Oh, and a Defender will go plenty of places a Hummer can't. In fact, the British forces got tired of recovering US Army Hummers from getting their overloaded asses stuck in the sand. They're too heavy, have a horrible breakover angle, poor fuel economy (meaning a short range), and stupid independent suspension. Land Rovers may not be the best off road vehicles ever constucted (I think things like the Pinzgauer products, Volvo C303 & C306, and Mercedes Unimogs deserve that title) but they're the longest running, the most prolific, and a damn sight better than a Hummer.

B) Old engines can't be compared to new ones... my petrol Land Rover's turned over 400K on it's powerplant.

Every vehicle has it's own strengths. You could say a Samurai is the best 4x4, if your into tight woods in BC just for the fact that nothing else is as narrow.

Do they no longer make Hummers? (Not talking H2, H3)

Dude you're an idiot, many many many cars (including my mom's old volvo 240 had less than 100hp). It won't have a problem.

Tool.

The defender's lack armor, and their use is being seriously debated in British military operations right now because they have limited theaters that they can be deployed in.

So... yeah.

Although they are still utilizing the Wolf variants in Afghanistan right now. Hell, it's an argument Canada went through a little while ago when it came to replacing the G-wagen; armour vs mobility.

But in regards to being a successful off road vehicle (a scenario that doesn't take into account the specializations required of a fighting vehicle), I'd still take a Defender over an H1. I was merely using the fact that British Land Rovers are being forced to recover US Humvees to illustrate that the H1 isn't all its cracked up to be.
