thats reasonable, usually i go to more finer japanese places with my family. and we usually order their daily assorted sashimi/sushi with tempura..I think what sets a good japanese restaurant is how well their tempura is done up,, usually many places are very oily and too much bater.

i will try that place out !

that's the newer manzo. its chinese owned but i think some of the servers are japanese. personally, i found it overpriced. not to mention, you can hear the "sushi chef's" swear quite loudly in cantonese and english when i was there.

^ That place is shit. The food sucks and expensive too. I agree with the swearing, I must have heard a chef say Diu at least 10 times when I was there. The other Manzo is better, but I would still go to Nanchuu if I wanted izakaya food in richmond.

My favourite sushi places are:
1. Octopus Garden (1995 Cornwall Avenue, Vancouver)
2. Torarenbo (Granville + Cooneyish, Richmond)
3. Kiyo (5 & Cambie, Richmond)

Torarenbo isn't the freshest place, nor is it very cheap. It's selling point seems to be a decent quality vs price ratio.

For instance, a whole Uni in a shell cost around $16 last year. Depending on availability they also serve imported stuff like Monkfish liver and Chu-Toro, for reasonable prices too. But again, if you want nothing but the freshest seafood, you're better off sticking to some of the other places mentioned above in this thread.

Yes, just tried Torarenbo yesterday based on the reviews on dinehere.ca

I wouldn't go there again as I am pretty picky with my sushi.

Its more like AYCE quality than authentic sushi.

I decided to leave and eat in another restaurant when I was only 50% full. ( I have never done this before)

Everytime I've been to torarenbo so far its been pretty fresh. I don't know how it could be compared to Ayce quality.... not even close. They use sockeye too.

Kingyo is also one of my favs along with the Guu in Gastown and the Guu that's closer to Denman. I absolutely hate Happa's though their food just isn't good at all.

I just had that tonight w/ high expections. But it just tastes like a regular fish & chips. If it didn't mention "shark" I'd think it was halibut/cod.

There used to be a restaurant called "Sakura-ya" in Richmond. It was only open for a very brief time, but it's the best Japanese food (home-cook) I ever ate outside of Japan.

Kingyo and Guu with Garlic are both pretty damn good!

I agree, Hapa wasn't really that good when I went but a lot of people seem to like it for some reason cause it's packed most of the time, for some odd reason..hahaha

But Kingyo is damn good! Although the portions are a little smaller then other Japanese Tapa places..but it's fine haha
