does anyone know where i can buy this?!? a friend of mine is a junkie for this kind of stuff and she would fly back to HK if she could... but i was hoping there might be a shop local here that sells the maker.

Man if I can save all that money I spend on waffle egg balls, I'd be a millionaire!

I haven't seen it at either place. I have yet to check all the Richmond "malls" and places in Crystal Mall. If you're REALLY desperate you can jack one from the dancing guy at Night Market while he's not looking

I don't think takoyaki mold would work, because you have to cover the whole thing and you basically have to place it on a grill. The "gai dan jai" maker is like solid steel or something, and you need the handles to turn it over, or else it won't turn out very well (either turn into sponge cake type deal, or half of it is still raw batter)

i went to that dessert place next to TnT in metrotown and they had those electric ones, and the person working there did exactly like you described. the plates were already preheated. she poured the batter on one plate, swished it around a bit, closed the other plate on top, and then turned it over. she then set an eggtimer for 5 minutes or so, after which it was done... $3.33+tax and into a paper bag it goes
