Ford 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 twin-turbo engine revealed

In an attempt to capture attention from speed freaks and Earth lovers alike, Ford today released information about the new Ford EcoBoost engine. The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 pumps out 355 hp with 350 ft-lb of torque.

The EcoBoost will debut in the Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS, and Lincoln MKT later this year. Ford claims the engine competes in power with rivals, like the 4.6-liter V8 engines found on the Cadillac DTS, Hyundai Genesis, and Kia Borrego In fact, they are quite right. The engine on the DTS gets up to 292 hp and 288 ft-lb of torque, while the similar Hyundai/Kia machine gets up to 336 hp and 323 ft-lbs.

Ford's new EcoBoost V6 even beats out their own 4.6-liter V8, found on the Ford Explorer. That engine gets 292 hp and 300 ft-lb of torque.

Meanwhile, Ford estimates a 10 to 15% gain in fuel economy when compared to similar class vehicles. The American automaker will heavily push these figures on potential consumers, as the company sees more power and efficiency as a key to selling the three vehicles. "The beauty of EcoBoost is that it enables us to downsize for fuel efficiency, yet boost for power," said Ford product development VP Derrick Kuzak in a statement.

"We're able to decrease the size of the available engine - such as installing a V-6 versus a
V-8 - yet boost the power using turbocharging to deliver similar power and torque of that larger engine."

The Honeywell GT15 turbochargers operate in parallel at speeds of 170,000 rpm. They produce up to 12 psi, and should live for at least 10 years, or 150,000 miles.

Keith Plagens, a turbo engineer for the company, said, "We've tested the turbochargers at a much-higher duty cycle than a customer would ever experience. ... Our whole goal from the beginning was to make the operation of the turbochargers seamless, so the customer wouldn't even know they were there."

Direct fuel injection is all the rage these days, and Ford has included the system on their new engine. DFI helps make the engine more fuel efficient, and emit less C02, even at a cold-start.

The 2010 Ford Flex will be the first vehicle to offer the new Ford EcoBoost engine.

Those are some cute little turbos. I wonder if this motor will end up in anything fun, like a Mustang or Focus.

There are rumours that this engine will show up in the new Taurus SHO.

Looks like a lot of potential with this engine - it would make a great addition to the Mustang line (though it would probably cannabalize the V-8 sales)

They could nix the v8 GT and put this motor in its place. Then just use uprated V8s like the upcoming Boss 6.1 for the higher end, limited run models.

Ecoboost is nothing new, it's nothing but a turbocharged fuel injected engine.
The word "Eco" is just a marketing thing to make people think it's some sort of ecological technology.

^ Yeah, cuz we all know Ford is the first manufacturer ever to attach some sillly name to technology.

ATTESA - Advanced Total Traction Engineeering System for All-Terrain

Who came up with that mouthful? Don't even get me started on how many times the Japanese have used the word SUPER along with some silly acronym.

They should put this in the Mustang instead of the 4.6L V8. Why not? GM is putting a V6 in the Camaro with 300 HP and only the top models get the V8's.

Just think how much fun the tuners could have with cranking up the boost. Mustangs everywhere with +400HP simply by chipping.

Um no. This motor will not go in the Mustang GT. The mustang is a muscle car, not a sports car. It's supposed to rumble at idle and when stomped on, be loud as fuck or, in the case of the Shebly, be supercharged with instant low-end power and wail like a banshee. Turbo cars are generally quiet in comparison and much laggier.

It *might* go into the Pony (v6) Mustang - but not the GT.

Personally, I would like to see this eco-boost engine in an AWD Fusion with the front driveshafts deleted.

The V6 EcoBoost offers mileage numbers of 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway on the all-wheel drive MKS, a full-sized luxury sedan.
OKAY...16mpg city is considered good? I am not convinced

look at the end of the downpipe/catalytic converter, then follow it up, and then you'll see the turbo, then say "aw it's so small and cute..."

asian_XL: Then what about these cars?

Acura RL 16/24
Acura TL 17/26
Infiniti G35x 17/24
Lexus GS350 AWD 18/25

Considering the Ford Ecoboost has significantly more HP and torque than either of these cars, and it's a full-size luxury sedan (with AWD) I'd say those numbers are pretty good.

BTW, you do know that the US gallon is smaller than the Canadian gallon, and that those numbers would be EPA estimates, right?

^ keep in mind, max HP/torque has nothing to do with good mpg.
16 mpg is measured only if you drive like your grandparents @ almost constant speed.

if you have driven a corvette, you can get 30mpg on hwy easier @ 6th gear (15-1600rpm),
but once you floor the pedal, it drops to 5mpg.

I am not saying this V6 is relatively worse than its competitors...they just get to stop
making these ridiclous large gas guzzlers on the road.

Keep in mind the EPA makes its figures with a 55/45 highway/city mix I think (or it might be the other way around... city/highway) so you can do significanlty better than they state if you drive conservatively... look at the Yaris, it's got an EPA of like 34mpg or something like that and people regularly get 40mpg quite easily.

If you can keep out of the turbo a little bit in this thing the mileage will be quite a bit better.
