I'm going to Mexico!

Leaving on the 29th for a week on the Mayan Riviera with my wife. For our wedding, we set up a gift registry at the Flight Centre (which I'd highly recommend for anyone getting married - especially if you've already got toasters and salt & pepper shakers), and today we went and booked a trip to the Grand Sirenis Resort. (http://www.grand-sirenis.com/)

I'm sure at least a few of my fellow Revsceners have been to that part of the world before, can you offer any hints on things to see around there? We're staying just outside of Playa Del Carmen.

I've never been there, but I'm sure you'll have an awesome time! Sounds like a wicked trip.

i just got back from 2 weeks in playa del carmen on monday
if you wanna do some good snorkelling head down the coast to akumal (~40 min $3 by bus down and $2.50 by collectivo back to playa)
akumal beach has wild sea turtles cruisin around, munching on seaweed etc... and if you swim out a bit further theres a reef. If you wanna see pretty fishies take a cab from akumal beach to yul-kah (or something like that? 9 bucks a person to get in and heard from some of the people there its just as good as xel-ha and !xaret snorkellin wise)

Yeah, when we stayed in PV, they recommended bottled water for everything. In the rooms were 2l bottles that they replaced free of charge every day for brushing etc. At the bar too, they pushed the fact that even the ice cubes were made with treated water. You gotta watch yourself on that stuff, especially if your immune system is suspect at all.

nice, I am sure you'll have lots of fun. We head down to PV on Feb 28th, we were there last year and had a great time. The resort we stayed at and most that I am aware of have filtered water in the bars and such so we weren't to concerned about that but I could see how it might be an issue if you get away from the resort.

from what i've heard most of the resturants use bottled water for their ice cubes and such now. I used tap water to brush my teeth *shrugs*
the blue parrot beach club has a fire show every night at 11 (i didnt make it down to see it but apparently its pretty cool, they even burnt the place down once!) and if you want a really good (but expensive) dinner out on the town i'd go to the blue parrot resturant (entrance is on 5th ave)
I did Tulum and Coba as far as ruins go, Coba i wouldnt bother getting a guide for, theres not a ton to see but you can actually climb to the top of the ruins (which is cool, it pokes up through the middle of the jungle) Tulum has more different stuff and would be more worthwhile to get a guide at (providing you're planning to do some sightseeing).
Theres also some cool cenotes to swim in with crystal clear water (some have 200m of visibilty)

just confirmed that she's leaveing on the 24th and comming back on the 30th.

They're not staying in the same resort, but the same area.

I'm not going because well...I don't really like her sister much to begin with, and we can't afford the $2500 for her to go, never mind $5000 for both of us to go.

And I'm going to Vegas with my dad in like a month and a half which I had planned before this wedding came up.

I highly recommend a day trip to Chichen Itza. Also, Tulum is worth a look but it is not nearly as impressive (much older ruins). Xel Ha is a fun day if you want to do some snorkelling with a wide variety of exotic marine life.

Have fun!
