in times like these i would think most unions may turn a blind eye to people doing what they can do to put food on the table.

The ITA isnt a union, its the apprenticship governing body.

Because as an apprentice, you arent allowed to do work that isnt signed off by a journeyman. As I am just waiting to get into 4th year to finish my apprenticeship I know how you feel, but they do care. There was a guy who worked for a friends company that did a side job and the home owner was bragging to the inspector about how cheap it was and how he could pay cash. The inspector got t guys name and suspended him for 1 year. The guys company went to bat for him and eventually he just got a slap on the wrist. I wasnt trying to start a fight or anything, just give you a heads up.

In order to do any work on a house, weither it be Gas, Electrical, Plumbing, etc, you need a permit. To get a permit you have to be either a home owner, or a ticketed tradesman. Anyone who has spent any time on a residential job site knows that side jobs are done all the time, and always under the table. Cash and no paperwork are a given, as both parties can get in trouble. If you werent required to take out permits, why would companys spend hundreds per job on permits and inspections?

Quote:
Whether you’re building or renovating your home, there are basically five types of permits that may be required:

* Building permit: For the construction of a new home or alterations, additions or repairs to the structure of an existing home.

* Electrical permit: For wiring in a new home, or changes to the electrical system in an existing home.

* Plumbing permit: For plumbing in a new home or repairs or alterations to a home's existing plumbing.

* Gas permit: For new heating or other installations involving the use of natural gas or propane, or for changes to these systems in an existing home.

* Occupancy permit: For the occupation of a newly built or substantially renovated home.

Permit list courtesy of Canadian Home Builders’ Association of BC.

Quote:
Who Obtains the Permit?

The person doing the work is responsible for obtaining and complying with the permit. If you hire someone to do the work, they must obtain the permit. If you’re doing the work yourself, then you are responsible for getting the permit.

i understand what your trying to get at but your answer to the op was saying he cant do work without the journeyman signing off. im a carpenter apprentice and i know all that bla bla permits( common sense) no need to tell me. You can still do work if a journeyman comes by afterwards minding that he gets the proper permits. I mean come on your telling me he cant fix something is just harsh. example your sink is fucked and you go and fix it are you going back to the " im not allowed" and not do it. Another example is . if your mom has a leaking pipe would you not fix it? Get my point.

It just some of the "Rules" they give out are a little shady and theres a way around it.
When im working theres probably 1 journeyman and guess who? my boss
as long as there is a journeymen your good to go. i remember when i was working i asked the plumbers if they had there tickets they said no theyve just been doing it for a long time and the only licensed journeyman is the boss.

in the end you are right about the things but you and i know this stuff happens all time. Its all about MONEY. And yah all tradesmen should be qualify no different from a doctor because its your home.

thanks guys didnt mean to start a war lol, i really wasnt aware of that, but im not talkin about doin a whole house here, just doin a hot water tank, or installin a toilet or sink, you dont need a permit to do that, so i think its justified.
thanks

There are apprentices out there that can do a better job than some journeymen.

They do have trades in the forces that never leave the base you know? Plus you get stability of never losing your job and you get a pension, benifits. Not that I care if you join or have anything to gain but its not all fighting in the forces.
I have been contemplating it for a while now.
