As cars become less Car and more Computer, Moore's law is going to take on more effect as cars go on day by day. ( Moore's Law http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore's_law )

Think 1957 Chevy vs 2007 Chevy. As most of us are still going to be alive in 2057 given the current rate of computers taking over cars, I'll bet we will see full auto drive cars in our lifetime. Its in its infancy right now. Imagine being able to get off work, exhausted, climb into your car, tell it to get you home, and then just lay back and take a nap for that congested commute.

I'm willing to wager that the second pic is aerodynamic modelling of the car.

Some of the others look like radar proximity technologies that are available on other cars already.

^^^ How fun is sitting in traffic for 3 hours... I would love to be able to kick back in my leather seat recline that shit and relax as my car took my home in 10km/hr traffic. When the road opens up or traffic goes away simply sit up push the manual button and start driving.

Berz out.

I would expect the auto drive to be something like traction control is today. Turn it on, when you want to relax and be safe, kick off when you want to have some serious fun and let the driver do the sliding.

The BMW F01 and the new E class shares the same sign detection system.. Audi will have it shortly.. they are all licensced from a company called MobilEye.

As for the clock.. Mercedes have their clocks on the dash, it has always been a tradition of theirs..

"Attention Assist: How the Mercedes driver assistance system detects tiredness"

I like the nissan system more...it has a camera that detects your facial expression to determine whether you are tired or not.

IMO its just useless technology. Why the fuck do you need that? We need computers to tell us there is a road sign ahead?

If my eyes can't read the road signs I probably shouldn't be driving, i dunno.

Do you need a computer to tell you that you're tired? I would tell the computer to shut the fuck up.

1st pic - Attention Assist - warns you if it thinks you're falling asleep.
2nd pic - Aerodynamics testing. Those are airflow vectors you see. If I remember correctly, the colour of each arrow shows the air pressure (forget if it's static or dynamic that they use in this particular lab but most likely dynamic) at the base of the arrow. Blinky is correct. You get a cookie
3rd pic - most likely heat dissipation. Initially thought it'd be aerodynamic pressure, but you can see the "hot spots" where the headlight bulbs are.
4th pic - Yup it's Diesel. Besides looking at the 5L/100km, you can also tell that the redline is before 6k (the dial goes up to 7k on gasoline engines).
7th pic - The W212 has smart-dimmming headlights that actually detect oncoming traffic. I wouldn't be surprised if that pic is showing the light intensity as a function of length down the highway.
9th pic - Actually this could be useful. Ever merge onto the highway or get stuck behind a truck then wonder "zomg how fast should I be going"? (assuming the computer can read it that quickly lol)

Oldcracker is right though. Half of the newest technology never makes it to this side of the pond, or is deactivated via software. Stupid outdated Transport Canada/DOT regulations.

heh the sign reader maybe reading out the signs for you on request.

I think that's pretty cool, like Rally game: "sharp left ahead".
