| is under car neon light legal?
i am thinking to install the undercar neon light on my suv and i have read both Divisions and the sticky about lights but nothing have mentioned about them, anyone know anything about them? are they illegal at all or any special colour(s) is legal and some are not???

Its not illegal to have them installed, but it is illegal to have them turned on, even if parked when you are public property. IE In your driveway is fine, at a car show is fine. In Tim Horton's Parking lot is NOT FINE or driving on the road its NOT FINE.

^Further to that, to be legal, they must be covered with an opaque cover whenever you're on the street (that includes the Timmy's parking lot).

I've did some research on this long time ago.
1. It is not illeagal to have them installed on the car
2. Even when its off, the "tube"/bulb should not be visible from another cars view. To comply with this you can install a upside down L bracket of some sort.
3. You can have it on if the car is parked on private propery, ex/ shows, driveway etc.
4. Should not be on when car is in motion.

The other guys have covered it already. They are "unauthorized lights", and, as such, CANNOT be on a vehicle when on a "highway" in all it's definitions. If they are, they must at ALL times, be covered with an opaque cover. This now makes them legal as "off road lights". When you go "off road" at a car show or in your own driveway, you can remove the covers and operate the lights. FYI..parking lots etc are "highways" > You will likely get a ticket and a VI to ensure you have removed them. Fast & Furious was a movie, not real life.

Back on Topic. If the tubes themselves can not be seen do you still need to have them covered legally? I don't understand the reasoning behind this. Is it to prevent accidental "on"?
Edit: Skidmark answered below my quoted post. However I still fail to see how a Clear tube with little LED's in it requires by law to have covers on them. Its on the driver/owner of the vehicle to not use them on city streets.

No it's NOT. They are "unauthorized lights" and are NOT permitted, on or off, on a vehicle on the Hwy.

The cover law, is so that you can't turn them on go cruising around and then shut them off when you see a cop. As if the cop saw or thought you had them on, hell look under the car and regardless, if there is no cover, (you might have had them turned on) he can give you a ticket.
I have never heard of the issue being pressed, but there are weirder laws out there. However weird laws is a whole different topic.

so, let me get this straight ..
it's LEGAL to have them on the vehicle;
it's ILLEGAL to have them illuminated except driving "off road" or parked in private properties, like in a car show or gargage ..
do they need to be covered with an opaque cover? it's undercar neon light, so they are not exposed to other drivers or vehicles when not illuminated ...
also, Fast & Furious is as real as any forum stories in Penthouse !!!

Let me make this simpler. If you even have the ability to light them up while driving its illegal. Hence the covers. With covers installed you are not able to light them up at will. You would have to pull over, remove the covers get back in the car turn them on, and hope a cop does not pull you over to check if the covers are installed.
Its like Nitrous. Its legal to have, its legal to have hooked up. But you can't have it ON or be able to use it at the flip of a switch.
