ive been skating for a year now pretty consistently. am i good enough to buy a high end pair of skates? to my knowledge, they are stiffer and harder to flex. When does one decide their skill level is high enough to utilize them? will a high end pair allow me to skate faster?

New skates don't make you skate faster. Think of your legs as pistons and the smoothing more fluid the motion is the quicker you will go. The feel of a good quality skate will help don't get me wrong but if you want to skate faster you have to work on your lower body and it's all about power skating no matter how bad it sucks.

Found a couple Dennis Johnston jersey's from the early 90's today if anyone remembers him or even played back then lol

helmet : bauer 7500 with Bauer HDO straight cut visor (clip version)
shoulder: bauer one95
elbow: bauer one95
pants: bauer on95
shins: shitty bauer 1000
gloves: eagle ppf
skates: bauer one100 (chose them over the totalones as I didn't like the gimmicky flex tongue)
stick: base savoy special 75 flex p88

My favourite would be skates as well. nothing beats a great feeling pair of skates that are light and sturdy. I like my skates to be very stiff.

For me I did find skates made a huge difference as I had shitty canadian tire jobbers in the past. The stiffness of the carbon boot really made turning feel effortless, as you get a better edge than really soft boots (for me)

Gloves: easton eqpro, warrior pro series series2
Pant: bauer x60 girdle with warrior syko shell
Shins: easton eq30

Don't really have a current favourite gear right now. The mako stick is still at the top of my list but I'm skeptical about spending the money on another one since the toe split open pretty early on

^ Nice gear! I liked my Mako for the short time I had it, but I had the same issue. After using various topend Easton sticks, I stopped buying them because the blades are fucking garbage. I've heard good things about the Mako 2, but I'm skeptical.

That wasn't my issue with the RS.
Broke one on the lower hand from a slapper, warranty stick was slashed in half on it's first game. Third stick broke the blade in the middle on a one timer.

Hope the CCM fairs better.

i am surprised so many pros use easton as they are shit when it comes to durability... the pros have the luxury of not paying for them, but still.. knowing that it could snap at anytime would make me wary. maybe the pro stocks are constructed very differently

To me it's not about the newest gear, it's all about the comfort on the ice. You shouldn't care about if its the newest or best just about how you feel on that ice.

Already getting discounts at the hockey shop, helps knowing the owner and his son lmao

Shouldies and elbow pads are two things I give very little fucks about playing beer league, as long as they offer some protection then meh. Don't need top of the line stuff.

i think i paid 16 dollars for my elbows and 18 for the shins LOL

Haha yeah fair enough, but I'm not blocking shots nor playing full contact hockey anymore, so I'm not too worried.

the way i think of it is... buy higher end stuff and keep it for many many years... rather then buying low end gear having to upgrade later on.

HELMET: Bauer 9500 w/ HDO Pro-Clip Straight
SHOULDERS: CCM U+ CL (big change from the Vic Heritage :P)
ELBOWS: Bauer one75
SHINS: Easton s19
PANTS: Bauer one75
GLOVES: Easton s17
SKATES: Bauer one95
STICKS: CCM RBZ 75 Hossa, Bauer x7.0 87 Kane, Warrior Widow 75 Burrows
BAG: Bauer premium carry

Favourite piece: SHINS. Definitely the unsung hero in the bag, these are awesome. Deep knee pocket, great flexibility and top-notch protection. No more bone bruises from blocking shots like I got from my old st4's!

Next on the list: replace gloves with Nexus 1000, get rid of the pro-clip and back to the HDO pro annnd maybe Apx2 skates?! (that or maybe just the 70$ for some new steel)
