Watching Kobe's shot, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. When guys kick out there legs on a shot, I cringe when they land close to the defender's feat.

I ain't the biggest Kobe fan, but his determination has been fun to watch this season and seeing what he's been able to do at his age.

It will be a shame if he's done for the season and the Lakers don't make the playoffs.

is there a rule or hidden rule about player on a fadeaway jumper kicking out their legs so that the defender cant contest his shot?

It sucks if i am guarding someone and the guy kicks me in the nuts.

Doesn't Dirk kick out all the time. Not really kick but he knees up so if the defender in his grill they'll get knee in the ball. Move got popular Kobe was start imitating it and now you can see LeBron and even the kiddies like Durant using it.

Isn't it supposed to be an offensive foul... yet its not called very often..

Pushing off with hands for space is called much more often.. but its the same concept pretty much

More often than not, these guys aren't purposely kicking their legs out....When you do pull-up jumpers and fade-aways your legs are naturally going to kick forward - it also gives you more power to get up. I do it all the time, and I don't necessarily do it to create space...It just happens naturally.

+1 on natural movement. Also when i go up for floaters, I stick out my knee. I try to keep it down but it doesnt feel right.. not sure if everyone does the same..

I would definitely feel bad if i knee the nuts of the guy defending me lol

+1 to natural movement for jumpers and floaters too, its just a dirty move to make by being in their landing spot.. i injured myself that way too

Floaters are usually runners and you are making forward movement....If you are making forward movement, and you are playing in a pick-up game, it's kind of a cheap move, as nobody tries to take 'charges' in pick-up games...In a real game, if you are doing a floater with forward movement, and a guy gets hit in the nuts, you'll most likely get called for the offensive foul...

I know it's not the same as Kobe's fadeaway shot as he was creating space by moving backwards, but the offensive player should not be able to create unfair/unnecessary space for a shot. For example Wade sticking his leg out to get Sessions to back of him or a post player backing down his defender and swinging his elbows to create space.

I remember Kobe getting suspended on two occasions for flaring out his follow through to create more space. Anything that's not a natural movement/follow through needs to be taken out of the game.

NBA refs have done a better job recently of not calling the classic pump fake get the defender in the air, who jumps straight up to contest a shot and the offensive player "dives" in or creates contact by jumping towards the defender while shooting. If the defender jumps towards a shooter while in the air then it should be a foul.

I guess you can also hurt somebody the same way while going up for rebounds. I dont know how you can regulate this. I've sprained my ankle many times going for rebound and landing on someone's foot.

Jones walked into Kobe's landing space

it happens now and then by accident, if anyone did that on purpose, I'd be throwing punches
