If it hurts ALL the time, then maybe just rest a while. If it recovers, I'd stay away from heavy squats and deadlifts and that's it. I hurt my back a while ago and it only gets sore when I do those two. Unfortunately they are the exercises I love.

I'd do good mornings but I always keep remembering that Bruce Lee hurt his back doing those without warmup lol. Maybe I should do them with just the bar

Reverse hypers are the most therapeutic exercise for the lower back, but isn't necessarily a mass building exercise.

I would totally take time off if your back hurts, go see physio if you need to because if you keep stressing your back you'll end up hurting it even more then you think.

Like jakobi said, good mornings are great and so are back extensions. I would put the ego aside and work with minimal weight to reduce the pain, go for reps for now until your back heals up.

Welcome to my world.....I made a thread where some very VERY helpful people here helped me with my workout routine in regards to my lower back.

always warm-up and stretch before doing any heavy exercises.

when i hurt my back, it was hurting to the point where i couldn't even sit properly without having to adjust my posture. even hitting a little bump while driving made me twitch. i suggest you take time off, but if you must, then go light because any exercise you do will require your back muscles to work.

See a specialist for sure as lower back injuries can be serious. I have an old injury that I've been nursing ever since a motorcycle accident - nursing to avoid having to fuse a few vertebrae together.

But that being said, I've found 2 things that have worked very well for me.

Elliptical trainer - X-country ski type motion helps loosen my back via the rearward extension.

Pool work - Combination of water aerobics / resistance training (PM me if you want more details) and swimming. Do I feel like a dork jazzercising with all of the oldies in the pool? Sure but it has definitely strengthened my lower back and added flexibility in the process.

I've intentionally stayed away from things that would stress it like crunches with weights for example. Instead I have to work these types of areas with more repetitions but lower impact.

Lastly try to get in to see Dr. Street (spelling?) at the Vancouver Back & Spine Clinic. He should be able to do an assessment on your x-rays and recommend some options.
