Fox "News" takes cheap shots at Canadian Military

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcJn5XlbSFk

I fired off an off the cuff e-mail to redeye@foxnews.com . I'm sure I could have polished it a bit more, but I think the point is there.

Quote:

To the Attention of Greg Gutless,

I recently viewed an excerpt from your 'news' show, Red Eye, on youtube, in which you make an absolute ass of yourself trying to belittle Canada's efforts in Afghanistan. I am absolutely disgusted by your abuse of freedom of speech, a freedom won for you by tough men and women who fought and died in conflicts around the globe. Tough men and women like them are fighting for freedoms like the one you abuse in Afghanistan, and are VOLUNTARILY there, wearing Canadian uniforms. A disproportionately high number of these Canadians have given their lives ( as said by the US ambassador to Afghanistan http://www.nationalpost.com/story.html?id=399064 - though it was printed by a credible news source, which I assume you have no access to inside the walls of FOX 'news') to the cause, so that Afghanis (many of whom live in conditions that would leave you dead and rotting in the space of a week) can live better lives. Not because the Canadian army is undertrained, underfunded, or underequipped, but because they are fighting in Kandahar, one of the most dangerous areas of a particularly volatile country.

Canada, a country with roughly the same population as California, has consistently stood up for people the world over, in places most people like yourself and your Faux news team couldn't pronounce, let alone find on a map. On the day your piece aired, 4 more Canadian soldiers lost their lives helping the Afghan people. They weren't "running on beaches, wearing white capris," they were working out of austere forward fire bases, wearing CAD PAT uniforms, body amour and carrying weaponry on par with the American soldiers over there along side them. In the same interview linked above, Ambassador Wood (who is actually over there) had the following to say: "there is "no question" Kandahar is a more secure place than it was one year ago". "There's no question that Canadians are doing the whole job," and "There's no question that the Canadians have suffered an extraordinary proportion of losses, bravely and with dedication." Why would you, with no experience outside of your own ego, think Canadian troops are doing anything different?

Men, and I use the term loosely, like you pretty much sicken me to my core. You sit back on freedoms earned in blood by your forefathers, and make light of the efforts of others, and call it entertainment. While it would be easy to wish you harm and ill-will, I'd rather wish you a dose of reality. I wish that you could live a soldiers life in Afghanistan for 6 months or more. I wish you could know the constant unease of being constantly shelled, shot at, lied to by the locals you're trying to save, and under constant threat of attack from roadside explosives and suicide bombers. While I know that bit of reality is unlikely to come to fruition, as you'd have to be actually accepted into the military (even the US Army has minimum standards you'd be hard pressed to meet), I can offer you this small dose of reality: The names of all the Canadians whose lives were lost in the conflict you find so much pleasure in belittling. Think about them and the families and friends they left behind the next time you decide to open your ignorant fucking mouth.
I then copied the info from this article into the body of my e-mail:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadia...in_Afghanistan

I would encourage all of you to take five and express your thoughts on this one to Fox news. I'm sure all of our cute little Canadian e-mails will be brushed aside, but you never know, maybe it will strike a chord with someone.

Wow.. I can't even begin to describe how amazingly offensive this is. I knew americans were self centered ignorant jackasses but I had no idea how bad it was.

This is what passes for an apology in the states:

"The March 17th episode of Red Eye included a segment discussing Canada's plan for a 'synchronized break,' which was in no way an attempt to make light of troop efforts," host Greg Gutfeld said in a statement issued Monday.

"However, I realize that my words may have been misunderstood. It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize.
This prick is digging with both hands now.

Its fox news. Even the owners of Fox news dont take anything they say seriously. Getting mad at Fox news is like getting mad at Jason Ellis for swearing on the radio.. they are going to do it no matter what happens.

325ist 03-23-2009 08:07 PM

I signed that. Thats so so bad to say. thats not like saying our flag is gay or something. He ignorantly refuses to acknwledge lives lost for his contry, instead he mocks them. Why don't you spit on there graves on prime time. The "funny" thing is, he might still be able to keep his job still if he gave another insincere apologie. Good stuff.

325ist 03-23-2009 08:29 PM

look at how proud that woman is when the guy says "the most powerful country in the universe"

92SIvic 03-23-2009 09:45 PM

i like how in spite of it all he still makes a comment like this, "My apologies to the Canadian military, they probably could at least beat the Belgians" ..

So, I'm not the only one that thinks we should burn down the white house again? :P

m1ataman 03-24-2009 08:52 AM

Well said Kristian! I like how they add more proof of their total ignorance by talking about our freezing temperatures and Mounties on horseback. I guess parades are their reality? Inbred morons!

one of his fellow jokesters - a comedian who quipped that he wasn't even aware Canadian troops were in Afghanistan - was forced to cancel scheduled gigs in Edmonton.

Comedian Doug Benson had been slated to appear April 2 to 5 in Edmonton, which is home to a Canadian Forces base, but the venue owner asked him to stay away.

Swept up the backlash over that little wisecrack was a comedy club in West Edmonton Mall. Benson had been scheduled to perform there next week.

But the owner of the Comedy Strip said he received too many angry messages - including from friends and relatives of soldiers - to guarantee Benson's safety. One person promised to buy a ticket just so that he could throw a beer at Benson.

"We were inundated with emails and phone calls that were bordering on threatening," said club owner Rick Bronson.

"Unfortunately, (Benson) touched a nerve."

The owner's wife called Benson's agent and informed him that the show couldn't go on. The comedian apparently explained that the segment had only been meant as a joke and that he respected Canada's military.

As much as the whole thing makes me mad, I have to admit I love how upset we as Canadians got. We need to stand up for ourselves and that is the perfect example. The fact that even parts of the government were demanding an apoligy means a ton to me. I get so frustrated sometimes when I see things like this go by and no one does anything about it. Imagine we say "I didn't even know the US was fighting in Iraq and what 9/11?", the US would probably blow a top.

An interesting point I've discovered, is that the general view of active military members on an army forum I've just joined, is that they don't take nearly as much offense to the issue as civilians do. It's kind of odd really. The only positive thing that most of them seem to mention is kind of like what James said. They're happy that the general populace is banding together in their support for once.

not sure how many of you are members of supraforums, but i started a shit-storm reposting this there. good times, good times..

Army.ca ? I noticed that as well.

What I have noticed though about this backlash is that many are grouping all of America together with these 4 TV hosts. I don't think that is fair, and I'm sure the majority do not share their views or find their comments funny.

projectcivic 03-26-2009 10:14 AM

Realisticly I don't think its fair to group either the general US populas and the US army with these idiots. I know that the majority of US military and population is very aware of what Canadian military is doing and has done. It would like grouping all Muslims with the fanatics that are fighting in Afgan for Al Quada and the Talaban.
