Thinking of Buying a Diesel Truck.

Hey guys

So, I've always wanted something big, diesel powered, and big, lol. Low-and-behold a family member is thinking about getting rid of their truck (which I didn't even know they had - they're upgrading to new trucks all the time).

So, I've got a chance to pick up a 1994 F-350 XLT 7.3 IDI Turbo Diesel Dually - extended cab, long box. It;s a local Victoria truck, higher milage, rebuilt tranny, brake controller, and was used as a camper/5th wheel hauler, not a work truck - I'd probably get it for around $5-6,000.

Think this would be a good pick-up for the price? Is there any good diesel sites out there (just found diesel stop's forums, which seem pretty good)? Is there anything else I should look out for, besides rust? Oh, this would probably end up being my daily driver too, since my other, toy car, is getting some serious stuff done to it - it would be virtually un-drivable as a DD once done.

I should also mention that it's got the tow package, and a bunch of other shite. It's basically fully loaded with every single option, for the year.

cheers.

Look up the IDI 7.3 Turbo versus the Powerstroke, they're virtually the same - minus a few tweaks

Sadly it's the only thing I've got until the ZX is done being built. Even when she's done, I won't even fathom DD'ing her. Gas mileage doesn't bother me too much either, as I'm a university student with a free bus pass, and I work a block and a half away from home.

Find me a dually, extended cab (or crew cab), long box, and fully loaded for under $5,000 and I'll consider it.

$5-6000 seems like a good price. (not a ripoff, but not a steal, either.)

If it's a family member's truck, you have the advantage of knowing the history and being able to talk to the previous owner.

If you like the truck and you can get it for under $5k, I say go for it.

Thanks for the advise. I think I'm going to go creep it today, then hopefully take a look/drive it at the end of the week.

You're welcome to expand on that statement. From my quick searches I haven't found much info about the key differences between them...

To be specific, the only differences I've found is a heavily restricted exhaust, mechanical IDI, and an incorrectly A/R'd turbo setup.

Anyways, I took a look at the truck today. Body is in pretty good shape, bed has been used without a liner so its a little bit smashed, but generally okay, no rust either. A repair shop fubared the interior carpet (messed up a firewall grommet when installing a transmission temp gauge - the shop is paying to fix this though), but besides that the interior is in good shape. I thought the front seats were 60/40 bench seats, but turns out they're buckets (3 separate buckets - where the middle one folds down to create a centre console). Engine was in good cosmetic shape, and she started up on not even half of a starter rotation (cold start too) - she ran very smoothly too, with almost no vibrations in the cabin. Apparently, every owner has been adding anti-cavitation stuff to her since new. End result, looks like they'll want about $6500 out the door.

6500$ is to much.... this truck being through family and whatnot a "deal" would be low 4k... 6500 isnt anything special and maybe even to high.|
whats the milage at?
if your going to spend that much your maybe better off looking for a 94-96 Dodge 12valve cummins

but the 7.3 diesel is an awesome motor.

351xxx. Honestly, when I was told the price I was a little disheartened. They're looking to get rid of it come late summer, so I've got a bit of time to work the price down.

dont get a dually (if you dont end up getting the price down on this one) and make sure you get the turbo properly checked out! and the km's are fine on this one a diesel can go for way more but the other stuff will go... i was looking at older diesels too but then i got an 02 gas for the same price as a 96 diesel i was also considering, so good luck with getting the price down but its not worth 65
