Review: Jamaican Pizza Jerk

At Commercial and 11th. Website: http://www.pizzajerk.ca/

Went here last Friday after my friends decided that we needed to stop getting completely smashed out of our heads on weekends, and start doing something different, like going to small, unique, 'mom&pop' restaurants.

Outside it's a small storefront with bars on the window; but the awning makes it hard to miss. Inside, it's a small place with a few 2-seat tables, one big table (seats 6), and a bar in front of the kitchen where Bounty Hunta, the owner/chef, cooks. On one wall was a giant picture of Peter Tosh, the opposite wall was Bob Marley.

Bounty was the only one there at the time and it was somewhat busy, so it took awhile to even get the menus in the first place. Though not unexpected for this kind of place.

The prices were fairly good; for about $45 we got the Meal III, which includes a Large Pizza, two Jamaican dishes, a small salad (casserole-ish), and Jerk Chicken Wings (they ran out of wings, so Bounty gave us an order of Jerk Chicken instead).

The pizza we went with the Kapone, which has red onion, jerk chicken & sun dried tomatoes. This goes for $30 by itself! The dishes we had Goat Curry (only available Tues & Fri's) and Fish Roti (typically $9 each).

After about 20 mins (or what seemed like that long, wasn't paying attention to the clock but everything smelled good and we were hungry) the food came. Came with Tamarind Sauce and Hot Sauce.

For the most part, everything was very good. Highlights were the Fish Roti and Goat Curry. The Jerk Chicken, I felt, was a tad dry, and not spicy (though I suspect Bounty withheld the spice assuming we couldn't handle it; no worries we had hot sauce). The pizza was very good, a tad greasy. Ingredients were fresh (esp the tomatoes).

Bounty came back to see how the food was, and was surprised that a skinny chinese dude, a skinny brown dude, and a russian guy was able to finish everything! When the eating is this good, how could you not!
