Licencing Question

My lady friend is from Asia and she has a licence from her country. She wishes to get her driver's licence here but does not know the correct procedures in which to do so.

Does she need to take her written test? Does she need to rock an 'L' for a year?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If she is now a BC resident she needs a BC DL. She should contact the Govt Services office (ICBC) and start the process. Sometimes they will recognize part of the DL and she may just have to take a written test...or they may make her go through a road test. Probably a good idea as traffic laws vary greatly from province to Province in Canada alone.

Thanks for the tip!
I will get her to go into a licencing office and ask more questions.

Or she may not have to do any testing... when my wife came here (from Chicago), she just handed them her Illinois license and her license fee... they took her picture, and handed her a BCDL. She also brought a letter from her previous insurance company stating her clean record, and ICBC gave her the full 43% Roadstar+ everything-but-the-kitchen-sink coverage.

OK.,...I can hear the jokes coming....but when I moved here from Nfld I had to do the written test for the car and motorcycle DLs but no roadtest. had they known that Newfies used to drive on the left hand side of the road until they joined Canada....well, it may have been different.

Well, considering you can get your licence in some 3rd world countries for a bag of rice and a bunch of ripe bananas it should be mandatory to test when they come here.

JDM land, Kolea and most european states just need to hand over their licenses with a translation from the Consulate.

Other nations there's special procedures, sometimes involving a translated/notarized driving record from the nation of origin.
