Tenku Bakudanyaki

Anybody try this place? I noticed while driving yesterday...it's a little booth in an empty parking lot on Gilbert road just north of Westminster Highway in Richmond.

i tried the original like a few weeks back. its basically a giant takoyaki the size of a baseball. it was pretty good but its a bit pricey at $5. the little takeout box thing with the chopsticks and napkin are pretty cool though.

miss_crayon 05-08-2009 11:24 PM

oooo looks pretty good..but what an odd place to place a stand.

endless402 05-09-2009 09:40 AM

theyre not always open during their stated hours for some reason

hirevtuner 05-09-2009 09:57 PM

the takoyaki is good...i wanna try the special
they were sold out last time i went

Jermyzy 05-09-2009 10:02 PM

Okay, I tried it today. I got the original and chili mayo, they were sold out of the curry. It's okay...nothing special. Worth trying once, but probably not a repeat for me. I prefer Japadog :) They're open 11:30-9:30 every day, but sign says they will close early if sold out. It was quite busy today, and most of the customers were Japanese, so I guess that's a good sign?

I'll post pics tomorrow, too lazy to upload the pictures from my camera :p

skiiipi 05-09-2009 11:08 PM

i tried it today also
very strange location, wonder if they even pay a lease to be there
but i actually like it
i tired the original and the "special" which was seaweed miso.

i would definately go back
and yea, while i was there there was 2 japanese couples waiting in line

iceburner 05-09-2009 11:12 PM

Cabbage, squid, shrimp, octopus, rice cake, sausage, quail egg.

It smells really good and tastes good too, but I definitely didn't want more than one.

sh0n 05-10-2009 11:55 AM

Haven't tried it. But it definitely looks good

Any idea why they chose that location? Wouldn't they want to be in the downtown core closer to where all the international students hang out?

gnat. 05-21-2009 02:28 PM

i've had the mustard and mayo! awesome!
original! tastes great as well. authentic japanese!
the reason why they close early or whatever sometimes is because they're sold out. no point staying opened if they're sold out right?!
but that place is damn goood!

i like their location too! convenient, with parking especially. if they were to choose DT, they would probably get more business but so inconvient for those of us who live further away from DT and have to drive, but obtain shit parking (or expensive parking)!

i really liked it. it was a sunny day and it was great to have them there. I really enjoyed it.

we are not talking abotu a small squid, it was a huge slice of baby squid, one whole octopus, shrimp, and other stuff.

i gotta say, he's very good with everything. down to the napkin and he chopsticks as someone mentioned. very very japanese style, attention to detail down to presentation.

markguo123 05-23-2009 08:21 PM

tried it today while walking by. Tastes pretty good. Very cool presentation and a nice owner. Definitely worth a try.

muteki 05-23-2009 11:04 PM

Tis yummy =]

turbos86 05-24-2009 05:14 PM

Went there today, had the special, not too bad, but smaller and more expensive than ones I had in Tokyo. Their name is similar to the one I tried in Japan, so I asked the staff there if they're related to the Bakudanyaki franchise in Japan. He said yes, but I'm skeptical. Their name, logo and menu aren't even the same and this Richmond location is not listed in the Japan site (http://www.bakudanyakihonpo.co.jp/shop.html). Asked the guy why the menu is different, and he blew me off by saying ingredients here are more expensive. Probably another case of "knock offs" but at least their takoyaki tasted pretty good, just not as good as the real deal in Japan.

BabyblooLexus 05-24-2009 05:44 PM

my frnd has bin, she tired their takoyaki, says its just like the one she had in japan. must be damn good. i wants to try.

prelude_prince 06-09-2009 05:37 PM

I've just had this in Japan, however I thought it was quite gross =/ I had the original flavor, and there was a lack of tako in it... I think there was like 2 pieces in total. Basically I was eating a huge ball of the paste =/ It was very filling, however i'd perfer the smaller takoyakis

dark0821 06-10-2009 12:52 PM

so.. basically.. is a big takoyaki?

Timpo 06-14-2009 12:24 AM

wow

looks like takoyaki

gnat. 06-14-2009 12:25 AM

lolol! definitely a giant takoyaki but 20x worth it. they have baby squids and all that junk in it.
so good! the sauce is very filling though!

Timpo 06-14-2009 12:27 AM

oh yeah kinda off topic, but if you're wondering...

Bakudan means "Bomb" in Japanese
Yaki means "cooked/burnt" in Japanese
Tenku means "supernal" in Japanese

so.. Tenku Bakudanyaki means...

Supernal Cooked Bomb

SkinnyPupp 06-14-2009 12:38 AM

Tried these in Japan, very disappointing. Regular little tako yaki are much better than the "bomb" ones.

skyxx 06-14-2009 05:30 PM

I just went there and I got the "Wasabi-Mayo" Pretty damn good! I wanted another one cause I was starving but I was on my way home after.

Timpo 06-14-2009 08:13 PM

ok the bakudanyaki actually exist in Japan...I didn't know that
