So what you're saying here is that the soft red glow eminating from the inside of a family car as it bounces off a map or passenger's book is more likely to cause motorists to believe that it is a police car than would an ex-police crown vic, painted white with steel wheels and a laptop mounted near the radio for navigation purposes?

The difference is that a police "look a like" crown vic isn't emitting red or blue lights, so who cares if the car behind you isn't a police cruiser or not. On the other hand, someone may be confused when they see a red (emergency) light coming from a vehicle behind them.

Not once have you had to look twice to see if that white crown vic in the lane two over is an unmarked car or an ex-unmarked car...
