Should phoning and texting while driving be banned in BC?

Quote:

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Distracted drivers talking and texting behind the wheel is becoming a big problem on B.C. roadways. It has also played a role in the death of a 26-year-old Saanich man in earlier this year. The man's truck slammed into another vehicle at the same time the text went out.

RCMP Superintendent and collision expert Norm Gaumont says texting is even more dangerous than talking on a phone. “It's about as dangerous as you can get because you’re taking your eyes totally off the road, and you're preoccupied in doing something totally different.”

Texting and driving is banned in Washington State, and talking on a handheld phone is banned in Newfoundland and Labrador. Gaumont says they are looking at restrictions in BC.

Many people we spoke to in Vancouver think enforcement is necessary. “They are looking down and slowly moving, or it's a red light and they are looking down...and it's a green light and cars behind them are honking...or if someone is crossing the street they don't see them.”
This would royally screw over a good portion of drivers here, including a few of my friends. I can understand quick calls here and there, but idiots like my buddies who carry on a text message on the highway is absurd.

Unless you're dying or the next call is from some babe offering a hot, sweaty, backbreaking night of sex calls and messages can wait.

Should be banned...

Will people stop doing it? No. The chances of actually being busted doing are pretty slim.

Yes, it should be banned but I think it should be common sense not to drive and text at the same time.

I never got the point of texting? Wouldnt it be easier to just call? Why spend 2 minutes typing up a message and wait for a reply when u can call & get a response rite away

i agree texting should be banned.

phoning, not so much considering you are looking at the road and have at least 1 hand on the wheel at all times, much like drinking a slurpee while driving. Unless you drive stick, then you need a car that has integrated bluetooth to pick up your calls.

if you're texting while driving you might as well take a nap while driving

you're not even looking at the road how can you know what's in front of/behind you

I don't think it should be banned, it's like talk and drive at your own risk.
some people are better multi-taskers than others, so they don't have to suffer too?

Do you guys type on your computer keyboards while staring at the keyboard?
Don't people know how to text without looking at their phone yet?.........
It's pretty easy unless you have a stupid all-touch phone.......

Yes, with a touch phone like the iPhone t's near impossible to type out a text without making mistakes.

An ounce of prevention is more valuable than a pound of solution.

What i dont understand is that if i drive without my seatbelt, where i jeopordize my safety, i can get fined. If i txt or use my phone while driving, where i jeopordize the safety of others and myself, i am not doing anything wrong legally.

I have brought the issue up with several politicians at various levels but they all point fingers at each other. Federal level politicians say it falls under provincial jurisdiction; while provincial blames federal. Its quite comedic.

a girl text messaging ran over a biker a couple of years ago in surrey, i'm not sure your reactionary solution would be good enough for the family of the victim.

You could be the best mutlitasker in the world but you are still taking your eyes off the road and typing on a keypad. A multitude of objects (ie kids) can move infront of your car in a second or a vehicle could come at at sudden stop. I understand driving at your own risk, but you are also driving at the risk of others. I say ban it.

Texting is not just about sending a message, you also have to reply and that requires you to divert attention away from the road onto a tiny screen held by a shaky hand and interpreting the message.

I understand how some people can be stupid enough to not know how to text without looking at their phone. I understand that other people can be dumb enough to not be able to take their attention off the road for a mere second at a red light to read the message sent to them. I personally can do it quite easily...and I'm sure others can too. However, that said, I completely understand why they would ban it because the majority of people, for some reason, probably aren't capable.
