I've been working in the restaurant inustry for over 9 years now and went to school for this crap. Servers in North America are just plain spoiled and half the time don't deserve to be tipped at all. Sometimes when a guest leaves a tip I want to give it back because my staff gave such a shit job. How bad is that when the manager wants to give back your tip because they didn't believe you got the best service. Working in Vietnam is shit. Beyond shit. I never worked in such a shit place before and its a famous hotel in Vietnam. These fuken retards even forgot to pick up the head office people at the airport. Im jsut bloody happy as hell that tomorrow is the last day of my contract and I get to leave finally.

I had 1 server tell me that rat shit was sesame seeds ... BIG PIECES OF RAT SHIT my boss is always like OMFGMOFGFFFFGOMFGOMFG in French. Really feel bad for the guy ... hahahahaha
Yes, tipping is not customary in Asia but it is common in Europe. The french phrase for a tip is "for drinking" when directly translated. I know for a fact that in europe it is not obligated that you pay a tip but is fairly common amongst all European countries.

Though the tipping system is no where near what it is in North America. NA by comparison is spoiled beyond all recognition.

tips are fucking overated, thats what it is

dont give me the bullshit that ohhh they are making minimum job, they rely on the tips to survive. Bullshit, dont like the job? quit that shit and upgrade yourself and gtfo of that shit hole and make better money instead sitting on ur lazy ass all day and bitch.

U dont see janitors get tips, they make minimum. A 5 years old can take food from point A to point B without having an issue other than tripping over once in awhile. I dont get tips for doing my jobs, and neither should they. Simple as that, as simple as serving food to the table.

pfff, the 20% tip bullshit

lol most ignorant thing I've heard all day. First off I'll speak for myself, I've never talked back or whined at customers (I get mad but I can't help that) for giving 0 tip whatever it may hurt my overall tips for the night but whatever, I've accepted it as part of the job.

Secondly, you do realize that a large majority of people who work as waiters/waitresses are students right? They aren't just 'sitting on their ass all day and bitching.' They're tryin to 'upgrade' themselves and make a living at the same time. On second thought even if they were just serving as a main source of income they'd still be doing honest work so I don't even get why you think they'd be sitting on their asses the whole day.

And the thing about the janitors, sure most START with minimum but they can work their way upwards to 16-18 an hour. Which isn't bad at all. The wage for servers are usually 8-10 and stays around there regardless. And theres more to serving than just bringing food from point A to B. Drink/Food recommendations, refilling drinks, and just catering to the customers needs. Add the fact that 5-10 people will be hounding at you for something every other minute and it gets pretty stressful. So if you think tipping for service at a restaurant is bullshit then go piss off to a mcdonalds or a BK.

They still do at most restaurants for Dim sum and Dinners. Plus they bring in these pre meal snacks automatically then they charge you for it even if you don't eat it. Nowadays, Tips seems like a mandatory thing but in fact it isn't. You can go to other countries like Japan and they don't usually take tips. Oh and I'm not being cheap...lol

This discussion reminds me of the tipping scene in Reservoir Dogs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBFUDbOldMs

Personally, I try to tip 15%. 20%, if the service is exceptional.

Smart? No. Dirty? Yes. In fact, a lot of Chinese restaurants do this. I generally make it a point that I want my change back and leave little to no tip as backlash.

My mom was also embarrased by the manager in Burnaby few years ago. Basically, she got the same treatment from the manager...and here is the story:

My mom had been waiting for so long for the server to give the bill. So mom came up to the desk and paid through her credit card. She signed it and gave the reciept to the manager. Then the manager started telling to my mom "cheap" "go to mcdonald or bk" in front of everyone. Unfortunately, the manager was unaware that my dad, who was sitting on the table, was really in good mood on that time gave the server $50 bill as a tip. $50 bill for less than $20 dollar reciept and service that was sooo slow and very poor. Of course, my dad heard the manager bitching at my mom and calling her so cheap...so dad came up to the manager and asked him, "how much are you?" I seriously swear, the manager had the guts to say, "it depends on how much you can afford."

So dad called the server --> took the $50 bill -->Took his wife's hands -->smirked at the manager --> gave the manager a candy and said -->"here take a chill pill...because thats all you need right now bud. And as for your price, you are not even worth $1 for me." And he left...

true story.

If the service was bad then they don't deserve to be tipped but what's worse are people like Mugen Evolution who are just plain cheap (and like to justify their cheapness to boot)

To those that don't understand the tipping system: There are two options..

1. restaurants could raise all the prices on their menu's or simply add a 10-15% service charge to cover wages. Or..

2. The system we have in place now, where you pay just for your food, and when the service is acceptable you add 10% tip and if it was very good, you add more. This gives servers the incentive to work harder and provide better service.

I eat out a lot and have been to restaurants with both systems and almost with no exception, restaurants that have use the tipping method provides better service.

The reason why other professions don't have a tipping system is because they all charge you the full price, both labor and material (system number 1) whereas in the restaurant business, they separate the two.

Coles: I hate cheap people, (*cough* Mugen Evolution) and I don't even work in the service industry.

When I tip, I tend to give it to the waiter/waitress directly after I have paid. I didn't leave it on the table. This was in France, Germany and Italy.

I can understand why they thought you left your money if you just left it on the table seeing as it isn't always common place.

the fish on rice in burnaby manager was a dick. my group of 6 were just eating, ordering our food and when the second order came, the manager had the balls to stick his head in the booth and say "you have to finish all the food." after that, we just left everything and left a crappy tip in pennies and nickels.

If you go for the food, Fish on Rice is actually very good for the price. Sure the service may not be that great, but how can you not tip them at least 10%?

Out of all the places that you go eat, the waiters/waitresses at japanse restaurants probably serve you the most. They come to take your order sheet, bring you plates after plates of food, bring you tea, take away your dirty dishes, take shit from rude customers, and at the end of the day don't even get a 10% tip? Eat your food, pay your 10% and leave. If you expect to be treated like a king, then AYCE is not for you. Go to a white restaurant.

oh, so because its all you can eat, you have to tip them 10% no matter how shitty the service is(especially from the manager himself)? if you tip them when they're bad, how are they supposed to know they need to improve?

I've only been to Fish on Rice just twice and that was the one on Broadway. Never had a problem with them, greeted and showed us to a table right away both times. Food orders came pretty quickly, didn't miss or mess up an order. Refilled our tea when we were running low. They were polite and all. The food was pretty good, nothing outstanding but good enough. Not sure if it's just the Burnaby one where everyone is having the problems with.

From what I've read, people are not tipping because of stupid reasons like they don't have enough money or they don't want to break a bill or something retarded.

Obviously there are circumstances where you get shitty service for no apparent reason and you don't want to tip, but I'm referring to the times when you received everything you needed and still don't tip. Usually managers and servers don't give you shit for no reason, you probably did something that caused that reaction.

I was at happy hour a couple months ago, and a group of high school kids came in literally 5 minutes before last call and ordered like 5 plates of everything. You wonder why managers get paranoid and tell you to finish the food? Well that's why. Not to mention the people who always order too much and hide unfinished food in tea pots and in between plates....

I've been to fish on rice on kingsway maybe 5 times, and every time I received adequate service. Not outstanding service like I would get at some fancy restaurant, but service that allowed me to eat my food, drink my tea, etc comfortably. Like I said, if you bring your food, bring your tea, take away your shit, what else do you need from them for a 10% tip? Should they suck your cock too?
