VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vicious bloodsport or simply two fighters battling it out in a caged octagon? That's the debate facing Vancouver City Councillors and the provincial government as the men behind the Ultimate Fighting Championship say they're coming to Vancouver. But what could this mean for the city?
First of all, it’s a billion dollar industry followed by the fact Vancouver is one of the top grossing Pay Per View cities for Mixed Martial Arts. However the city currently has a ban on MMA and the provincial government hasn't gone one way or the other.
A meeting between UFC brass and Attorney General, however, has taken place with the A.G. being apparently supportive. City Councillor Geoff Meggs is taking a ‘wait and see’ approach on the summer 2010 event. "Well they seem to have a good product but I can't pre-judge the decision of council. We'll see what comes from the staff and what the public input is in the fall and we'll go from there."
That staff report will look into best practises of other cities that have hosted Mixed Martial Arts events.
