Assuming it's a car that is already in Canada legally (ie, not an unregistered Japanese or US import), I think the only thing you'd need to do is make sure to update the insurance particulars. I sense... a call to your insurance broker.

You should ask your insurance guy. He would know this and be able to sell you temporary insurance too.

If you know someone in Calgary that can check it out for you, do that. I think it would be cheaper to just get it put on a train and shipped here. then all you have to do is get the provincial inspection and insure it.

how about taxes, what if the guy is alberta gifts me the car. do i need to pay the alberta govt anything, or the bc govt once i register in bc?

correct me if im wrong, but i sold my previous car to a person from alberta and he just did the following:
pre-purchase insurance from Albreta (in this case you do so in BC)
fly over to BC (which you will be going to Alberta)
purchase the car, get the ownership title changed to you, pay taxes there, and drive the car back home

and if the car is already registered under Canada, i think the only inspection would be done should be DRL?? not too sure with alberta, other than that shouldnt need any other inspection

If your bringing the car into BC from Alta, you will need to have an Government Inspection done at an approved facilty. This is a safety inspection so they are checking more then just your DRL lights.
A friend bought a car from Alberta, he paid the GST when he bought it (bought from a dealership) and then paid PST here in BC. He had the selling dealer deliver the car to the Acura dealer for a prepurchase inspection. He then flew to Calgary, and picked the car up, and drove back

ahh i c, thanks for the heads up, i was only giving info on merely what i've dealt with from a person purchasing a car in BC and bringing it back to Alberta

when you buy the car in other province, you pay the GST.

provincial inspection in BC, once u get that, u go to insurance and they ask you to pay for the PST. if i remember right.

When you purchase a vehicle privately, you need to take the title and the bill of sale (gift letter), and you need a provincial inspection (ie: Canadian Tire). After the inspection is completed, you will go to an autoplan and get insurance on it. You will need to pay the PST on purchase (7%). The insurance agent will need to inspect the VIN to ensure that the vehicle is the correct one on the bill of sale/title.

If the vehicle is older than an 2002 model, the first yr of aircare will be exempt because you did a provincial inspection. However, the next year, you will need to take it to air care

wow that sucks, so if u buy a USED car from alberta, u'll end up paying both taxes? not just 1 like if you purchased a used car from bc?

Even if the vehicle's gifted over to you, if there's an accident, ICBC will still pay the market value of the vehicle. However, it is a separate department that looks after the tax thing, which is called the Consumer Taxation Branch. Man these people above are giving you bad advice... it's a private sale, there is no GST on private sales... not in ANY province. You only pay GST if it is new or used from a DEALERSHIP not a private sale.

You will not pay anything tax-wise in Alberta.

When you get your registration in B.C. through ICBC, they will ask you how much you paid for the car and then they will charge you PST based on that amount.

You also must pay ~$100 to get a provincial inspection *before* you can get insurance in BC either through BCAA or any shop approved to do provincial inspections (I think BCAA is probably the most expensive unless you are a member)... same inspection as the infamous "VI ticket" inspection basically.

That's it... inspection and PST... and if it's older than 7 years you might need Aircare.

To add, you can only get temp. permits to drive it around til you get it inspected (and Aircared)

Oh and bring a BC transfer form with you and get a bill of sale and the registration (signed) when you buy the car.

A 2005 will not need AirCare until your in 2012.

I recommend driving it instead of putting it on the train.

I have read too many horror stories about cars getting transported by train and getting beat to hell by lot drivers, scratched, interior pieces stolen and more. Just drive it and have piece of mind.
