Toyota FT-86 Concept to Deliver "Racecar-like" Handling

Tokyo Preview: Stunning Toyota FT-86 Concept Delivers “Racecar-like” Handling : Auto News

Quote:
Until today, if someone asked you what the best looking Toyota from the past decade was, you’d have a tough time thinking something up. As of today, the answer is the FT-86 Concept, which is set to officially debut at the Tokyo Auto Show later this month.

The name FT-86 brings together Toyota’s past and future, with the “FT” coming from the FT-HS hybrid concept from a few years back, while the “86″ is donated from the AE-86, a small rear-drive, two-door Corolla-based sports car (called the Hachi-Roku), made famous by drifters.

Other than the design of the car (which is certainly impressive with plenty of Lexs LF-A inspired goodness), we don’t know a lot about the FT-86 concept yet.

What we do know is that it will be light weight, with “racecar-like handling” and be powered by a 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine. While Toyota hasn’t said as much, this is most likely donated from the boxer-engine experts at Subaru – meaning that the FT-86 is the mysterious Toyobaru.

Toyota hasn’t said as much, but you can be certain this concept car is headed for production in the very near future.

it will have to be priced to compete with cars like the genesis coupe, but i hope it turns out to be good. toyota needs some "fun" cars... plus the subaru boxer motor means a good aftermarket at launch.

and it's already in GT5: http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/06/v...o-5/#continued

Looks great, im sure there will be a lot of changes, the tail lights have no reverse lights or signals, rear diffuser probably wont be there. Interior is like a typical concept car.. all futuristic like. Weird seats with no seat belts, the stereo is the weirdest thing ive ever seen, zippers on the dash? I do like the "ABS" button next to the shifter though the A-pillar windows are something ive never seen before.

Apparently the engine is going to be an N/A 2.0L Boxer, 146hp.. at least it wont sound bad with an exhaust. If its light enough its going to be ridiculously fun, I hope they offer a boosted version.

Apparently its in GT5?

I like the exterior, but 146Hp sounds anemic.

true, but i doubt it would take long for someone to swap the 305hp 2.5L turbo motor from the sti into it...

Well it sure looks nice, and it'd be nice to see something other than the lame Solara listed in their "sports" group on their website. But to bring out a "sporty" car with less power than the Celica GT they decided couldn't generate enough sales is sorta......stupid. :?:

it would be nice if the base model had the NA motor, and have a TRD turbo kit...

Looks sorta like a baby GTR. Despite that, interesting competitor for Hyundai.
