hi everyone,

searched on revscene and there are a lotta extremely outdated threads about places in vancouver that are recommended for rolling, pulling, flaring etc. for fenders. All of them recommend Keeps Lab on Mitchell Island and no other shops. Problem is Keeps lab is now closed!

Is there another place in the lower mainland? Looking for an up to date answer (ie a shop that's not closed). I'm not looking to rent a machine or do it myself with a bat or hammer. I'm looking for a shop or a guy who worked at a shop who has experience with succesfully rolling fenders! anyone?

mopac are auto suppliers i see...i assume they're not a shop where i can go to roll fenders?

Hey man, My name is Curtis and I am good friends with Gerard and Paulo and helped them with Keep on many occasions. I work at Advance now. Gerard and I were rolling fenders back in the day before there was a fender rolling tool (ie baseball bat). I have worked on many projects with those guys and have rolled many fenders. There are no pot shots to be made about Keeps rep. Yes Gerard was the guy who rolled fenders at Keep, I guess you can say he was my teacher.

At Advance we roll fenders properly, cleaning out all the dirt and rocks collected in the inner lip, heat up the paint slowly and work the fender slowly while still keeping the painted surface warm enough to keep the paint from cracking. Any previous paint cracks or repairs to the fender can cause poor out comes.

I just wanted to clarify for you guys.

that's what I was going to say. gerrard was the only guy who I would let touch my fenders with a roller.

maybe call him up at mopac and see if he is willing to do a side job for you?

i think i'm gonna do it at Drivehard in Richmond. They're an RS sponsor, have a proper machine and are right by my house. My car is 98, so the paint may crack, it's just a matter of luck at this point...

I'll let you guys know the progress

In the meantime, anyone have any pictures or stories of paint cracking after rolling fenders? Will touch up paint suffice in most cases, for minor cracks?

the ones that i've seen crack (oem paint on an s14), peeled away over time and it was a rustfest after that... owner thought he could just seal up the cracks with touch up paint applied like sealant

cant i apply paint as well as anti rusting products or coats of some sort, if it does have minor cracks?

I used to do it regularly, and can offer a bit of advice.

First off, heat is the key to not cracking your paint. I like to get the paint surface about 80-90 or so degrees, or hot to the touch. That should allow the paint to move with the metal.

Second, do the roll in stages. I usually took about 10 minutes per fender, making a dozen passes with the roller. That ensures that you're not pushing the fender or the paint too much, too soon.

Finally, seal any cracks right away. I like to use rubberized undercoating to seal everything up. Mask the outer fender after cleaning the area to be sprayed, and have at her. This stuff seals beautifully.

Go slow and steady, and make way for new wheels.

hi guys,

i went to advance in richmond on no. 6 road to get my shocks done and the guy offered to do the fenders too. The result: he charged me $40 (other shops quoted me 160....) and there was no cracking whatsoever (other shops warned there'd prolly be cracking). The guy did it with a bat and heat gun, no fancy machine.

i told the guy he should ge ta website, but he doesn't want one, cause people contacting him annoys him lol. This shop is recommended on revscene for allignments and stuff, I found it through here, check it out!

FYI thats not entirely true, Gerard wasnt the only person that did it. But he did primarily do it after. Gerard and Curtis did alot of fender rolling before hand, way before they got a fender roller and even then Curtis helped out alot. I know because I'm good friends with both Gerard and Curtis.

Curtis from Advance is the shit! He's super knowledgeable, talented, fully licensed and is very attentive to detail. He would be more than capable to roll fenders properly. He was involved with Keep before but unfortunately more behind the scenes.

Gerard from Keep was dope shit too. It's too bad things didn't work out at his shop. Talked to him at Mopac, he's doing some cool projects right now. Good for him.

you guys arent understanding what it means by rolling your fender.

if u are just barely rubbing, then yes, a baseball bat, and a heat gun will get you the mild roll you need.

if ur running crazy offsets like some folks out there, they are rolling the fenders completely flat. this is more than ur run of the mill baseball bat roll. this intales a lot of prep working, cleaning, and post work such as sealing...

so 40 bucks for mild rolling, sounds about right, but for proper rolling, you need a fender roller machine, like the one that hypa posted up.

i had mine done at Keep, cost me $300 for both rear fenders, and took over 4 hrs to do both sides. Gerard rolled them with patience, heat gun, fender roller, and experience.

Advance has the fender roller machine. i was one of the first to test it out on my front fenders, and trust me, the SKILL part is a big part of getting the fenders rolled right. i rolled them myself using the fender roller machine, did not turn out anywhere near what gerard did. Curtis is a skilled mechanic and has worked along side gerard back in the day of keep. Again, SKILL is a big part of rolling the fenders right! Do it right, and do it right the first time!

my rears had a 0 finger gap, so i was rubbing when doing pretty much anything. I would say this is what !SG describes as "mild rolling" still. i was quoted 80+ bucks from shops, mild or not...and this is per fender.

So I dunno if the guy in advance in richmond does this regularly nowdays (as i said, people go to him mostly for suspension stuff) but he says he does anything. So if you want a cheap experienced fender rolling job, try it out. It's around 6 road and westminster hwy.

werd doing with a baseball bat is ghetto

a proper way to roll a fender is to use the proper machine/tools. Sure baseball bat gets the job done, but if that was the proper tool there wouldnt be any fender rolling machine manufactured now would there?

oh well watever
