Jobs in Fort McMurray?

Just wornding if anyone has ever worked there or a place like it. wondering if it is worth it. the job im looking at is paying $55.00 /H and a min of 175 H per month ($9,625). right now im making $18.00 /H and working 5 days a week, but not FT. Just looking for input :)

Super Dipper 11-22-2009 02:19 PM

it would probably help if you posted up what you are doing currently that pays you18/hr and what the potential job at 55/hr requires you to do.

your post is so vague and so short of information, im tempted to delete and get you to start over.

so if you go to fort mac there are some things you sould get before you go there
H2S alive, Standard first aid, OSSA, CSTS. fort mac there is no oil rigs up it is a open pit
mine that works 24/7 its mostly construction jobs there or trades jobs
lot of the companys pay good 25per hour and up but lots are shift work 14 to 16 hour days
including travel time from fort mac to fort mckay unless you get on in a camp
but you get payed a living out allowance around 150$ and up per day to live out of camp
but cost of housing is crazy i was paying 1200 per room in a 5 bedroom house
lots of drug problems there 4 shooting while i was there i was there six months
the companys you want to try are CNRL, Syncrude, SUNCor, Albian there is fuck all to do there i went to work home, gym didnt go out to the clubs except for once that was the NEWFY Bar which was fun but i wasnt there to party was there to make good money

Vansterdam 11-22-2009 04:49 PM

Hickman 11-22-2009 09:31 PM

alright sorry.

http://www.fortmcmurrayonline.com/jo...b.467.job.aspx

that is the job. as you may have guessed, i am a Auto mechanic. andi am red seal certified. is is not a camp job and it requires you to live in fort. all tho other info is in the link. thanks again.

oldsnail 11-22-2009 11:01 PM

there are some familiar landmarks there .. 2 shell gas stations... and a saveonfoods lol.

Castor 11-23-2009 09:20 AM

theres lots of big box stores there before i left they were going to put future shop up there
if the job doesnt provide a living out alloance then you will be renting a room for 1000 plus
a month renting an apartment is slim and very expensive if you rent a room in a house
lock you shit up and get a bear fridge to keep your on food in your room cause sharing
a community kitchen sucks ass 50% or more people that work or live in Fort mac do lots and lots of drugs my landlord was a coke head id give him my rent and he would blow it on Cocaine we had the power cut off twice and the gas cut off so be perpared

sounds like a lovely little town

Enraged 11-23-2009 07:39 PM

lease an RV. seriously, look up prices, it can be cheaper than rent.

Finding a place to keep an RV up there can be nutty expensive too. The people who make money in boomtowns are always the landowners, not the workers. Been that way since goldrush days.

That, and there aren't too many RVs that are warm in 40 below. If you can secure land before you go up, and don't mind being cold, it's a viable option though.

Castor 11-25-2009 08:24 AM

ya you just cant put your rv anywhere in that town there are designated places
and are stupidly priced per month

Tetsugen 11-25-2009 09:02 AM

just park it at walmart lol

Enraged 11-25-2009 01:03 PM

or, get this and park it anywhere you want: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Unimo...mZ300370336474

Hickman 11-25-2009 03:38 PM

CallTransOpt 11-25-2009 07:53 PM

I'd rather die then go back there

Slifer 11-25-2009 08:40 PM

^Is it really THAT bad over there?

Avery 12-17-2009 06:16 PM

i go to school with a couple of apprentice electricians (so am i) that work in fort mac and they say the hardest part is getting up in the morning and the weather and its easily worth it for the money their bringing in.

LiquidTurbo 12-17-2009 06:21 PM

Fort McMurray is a pretty drab place. I was there working for 4 months, but couldn't wait to get back to BC. Money isn't everything.

40 ? are you shitting me ? 40 below is walking around in a t-shirt weather. it hits 50 then with a windchill. thats cold then :)

Jay if you go to ft mac, expect to lose most of your months wages on just being able to survive. you make a lot of cash, but the cost of living is way up there too.

a heads up from when I worked up north. tell your boss to fucking give you a raise.

RenoMan 12-22-2009 12:30 PM

^ let see you walk around in -40 in a t shirt

I did when I was up there. the awespome thing about that area was there isn;t as much humidity as there is here, so when the suns out, not a lot of wind, you can walk around in a tshirt. not for exxtended amounts of time though, but you know, 1/2 hr to hr long bits. once the wind kicks in you would want soemthing warmer.

you haven't tried it before ? must not be willing to experince life or something.

I'm confused, which is it? Good money you can keep, or you're working just to pay rent?
