There are a lot of local clubs to ride with.

If you shop or service at a particular bike shop, vast majority of them will have a group ride in the spring through the summer.

Or try a ride with MEC.

Tuesday night La Bicicletta rides will start the first Tuesday in May. They meet up in Stanley Park, and separate the people in A,B,C,D groups. Very common to have 100+ riders attend, so each group is at least 20+. Great social ride.

Or look into joining a club. Again, depending on where you live there are a lot of clubs local to you. Glotman Simpson, Escape Velocity, Dopo Bici, Steeds, etc

Last few 30km jaunts around Stanley park have been averaging 28-31km/h as per my Garmin. Need to head out on some longer rides so I can make sure I won't bonk out. But i'd like to get some experience riding in some groups as i'll be doing the Tour de Victoria in august, and am aiming for a 32-35km/h average over the 140k route. I have a feeling it would be smart to test out the waters with some people around me before I start playing with hundreds, if not thousands of riders at once.

WTNC Crit#2 at Glenlyons again from this past Tuesday.

66 ppl in the pack made for hella sketchy times.

Made a ton of mistakes and kept taking the wrong wheel and couldn't stay on the front 15 group for the final sprint. Came 17th

I am amazed by the amount of watts you're able to output and sustain. What's your watts/kg?

Thanks for the kind words but I'm far from strong! I've never done a proper FTP test in lab... My garmin tells me that my best 20 minute functional threshold power was 270watts, 60 minutes was 255watts going up Seymour....

So depending on how you calculate it, I'm between 3.8 - 4.0 watts/kg roughly... validates my Cat4 failures lol

so yesterday drove out after work and picked up a new mountain bike. definitely on the lower end of the scale, but in the condition for price i can't complain.

2014 Specialized Hardrock 26er. the best way to think about the bike is "my first specialized" lol. in the last two years it was wridden twice, dropped, and then put into the closet. so i guess the person gave up on learning to ride a bike.

this is how little its been ridden. the rear cassette still looks factory fresh, could even eat off it. and of course the only battle damage to someone learning to ride. i can deal with that as bike racks would scuff that up anyways.

no pictures, but i spent today doing a little maintenance. took off those shit plastic pedals and installed some crank bros candy II's i had, and upgraded the brakes from 6" to some 8" hydraulics that i had sitting around. by far the worst part of the bike though is the front fork. SR Suntour air shock. im used to really plush oil dampened DH style front forks with 7-8" travel. so this feels like a POS. maybe one day will have to look into upgrading.

aaaaanyways. not sure if i'll keep for myself or give to my girlfriend. will fit in well with the rest of the stable.

hey, we all gotta start somewhere. But the amount of watts you're able to produce is a testament of your fitness/strength.

When did you first start getting into criteriums and did you do any training that was racing specific?

I only started doing the road races and crits this year, my first race was at the Spring Series events held in March. So far I've done 3 road races and 2 crits. I had planned on racing last season, but I chickened out after hearing about several of my riding buddies crashing out the first race really badly.

In terms of training, I rode with Escape Velocity for 2 full seasons year round. They have a great group of riders where the vast majority of them race or are ex-racers. They do a lot of group drills, sim-races etc.

But this year I joined another team Pender Racing / Dopo Bici and have been having the time of my life

Ahahaha, I must have misheard then. But if I kept their pace, going up a hill would have meant some serious mashing at that speed. #noderailleurs

ZN6, so I didn't get that bike at MEC, but when I got home in the evening and checked my email, I was surprised to learn that I won a new mountain bike from Sport Chek! Of course, it's just some entry level GT, but I'll take a win anyday. While I abide by N+1, in this case, it just equals out because I have to trade in an old bike for the brand new one. There goes my $10 junker! #1stWorldProblems

^haha, I wish! No, not even close. Right before you see me start turning it up, you can hear someone scream GO, that was my mates on the left hand side in the red jersey's and grey bottoms telling me to start turning it up, but instead i put the hammer down a too early (around 500m to go). I've been playing lead out this season... Not my races to win, we're trying to get certain guys on the podium first. Maybe in the next few races I'll get to sit in and compete for the sprints.

Here's a beauty shot from this past weekends Race the Ridge Road Race out in Mission Hatzic Lake. Most grueling day I've experienced riding a bike... Over the 1 hr 45 mins and 65km's, I held an average heart rate of 172bpm lol. Still paying for the damage today hahaha.
