Question on intersection of Sea Island Way and Garden City.

so from what i understand from the safe driving book, ALL Turns that go onto multi-lane roads, you are suppose to take the closest or inside lane.

so at this particular intesection, there are 2 lanes (Garden City turning right onto Sea Island Way) into a 3 lane road (Sea Island Way being 3 lanes)

Sea Island Way has 2 lanes going left and 1 lane going right. so for the 2 lane road, i will call the left lane 2a and right lane 2b. and the third goes to the HWY

so im at the light on Garden City turning right to go onto Sea Island Way to go into vancouver. im in the left lane on garden city, im under the impression that MY lane that im suppose to turn onto is 2b.

the guy whose at the right lane on garden city is suppose to take the 1 lane that goes to the HWY. then they are suppose to signal that they want to go into the other lane..

is this Correct?

coz a lot of the time, i almost get hit by people who think that the 2 lanes on garden city suppose to turn onto the 2 lanes of Sea Island Way to go into vancouver.

man i hope i dnt confuse anyone.. i will try and see if i can get a map off google or something...

For me, If I'm taking left lane. I shoulder check when its green, i go straight onto 2A. So the right lane cars can take 2B.

yea i do that now coz im dnt want people to hit me..

but what i want to know is if theres an accident.. who will be at fault?

If I'm understanding your description correctly, you are correct. If someone merged into you, they would be at legal fault (ICBC may/may not decide otherwise).

When intending to merge onto 99N, I'll signal my lane change over to what you refer to as "lane 2a" and use that lane. I'm surprised we're not called to more accidents at that location.

i just want to make sure if there was an accident, who would be at fault coz at the spot, the lanes are properly marked. so i was going by what the safe driving book says..

maybe someone from the law enforcement or from ICBC can shed some light on this...

Here's the intersection in question: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...01942&t=k&z=19

And you are correct, the right-most lane from the Garden City merge lanes, should go directly into the right-most lane on SIW.

When you have these sorts of multi-lane turns going LEFT, there are usually "dotted" lines on the road indicating the lanes to use, but such indicators on the right turn seem to be a rarity.

Perfect example: Mary Hill Bypass at United Blvd.: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...01942&t=k&z=19

Note that turning left from westbound MHB to southbound United has dotted lines (faint though they are). The three southbound United turn lanes onto eastbound MHB, I believe DID have lines at one point, although they're worn right off on this picture. But, of two right-turn lanes each from northbound United to eastbound MHB, and from westbound MHB to northbound United, none has the dotted lines. Odd thing is, there's a different sort of "confusion" going from United-north to MHB-east, in that the right lane on MHB ends shortly after the merge... most people in the left merge lane tend to go straight to the left MHB lane, while traffic in the right lane seems to regularly be divided on whether to go straight to the middle lane, or to go first into the right lane, which ends shortly. That usually leads to people in the middle lane trying to jam their way into the left lane, as people in the right lane try to merge with the middle lane when the right lane ends...

From the look of the road lines there, both lanes should turn into the curb lane. This is why it is important to not drive "choulder to shoulder" with the car nest to you.

The safest thing to do is to use the far right lane throughout that whole turn.

Wow that IS confusing; I often drive at this intersection and never realized it until I saw the google map image.

When I'm in the left lane I usually immediately signal and go into the middle lane then the left lane. I rarely drive down the middle lane as it merges into the left lane anyways.

I noticed last night, they do actually have dotted lines marking the right turn from the Hwy. 1 eastbound offramp to 200th St. northbound: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...00225&t=k&z=19
