Bad dreams!

The past few weeks I have been having bad dreams night after night. My sleeping patterns have been super effed so I don't know if it has anything to do with that. I'll go to sleep, then maybe a couple hours later wake up from a terrible dream (super vivid) in a panic and sweating like crazy.

What's even worse is it'll happen at least twice a night/morning!! I went to my doctor and she said she thinks I might be suffering from a thyroid problem (sleeping soundly then waking up suddenly/sweating/anxiety etc etc). Anyone else have an idea of what it could be?

I have been under a lot of pressure lately with my career and some personal problems (but it's nothing I haven't dealt with before--maybe this time it's just a teense bit more hardcore)

Help!? Thanks!

time to tell your bf to buck up...so you will sleep more soundly.

on a serious note, don't stress yourself at work and in your personal life...if its affecting your sleeping habits and life so much, is your career or whatever it is worth it?

Could be stress, or could be thyroid/hormone related. If you doctor thinks it's thyroid, then she would have done a thyroid hormone test of some sort. Did she find anything?

Are you taking any supplements? Certain ones can give you crazy dreams. Everything from DMAE to Melatonin to 5-HTP to even Vitamin B6 can give you whacky dreams.

that's why stress balls are invented

maybe take 10-20 mins just doing nothing at night before you go to sleep
do you watch tv, use internet or read before you sleep?

I wish I could have nightmares every night, or any kinda vivid dream.

I duno about you, every time I have a crazy nightmare, i wake up and i'm obviously startled, but after the anxiety and fear drops (really quickly), i kinda go "wow shit that was fuckin awesome!" then i go right back to bed, right after I write em down.

i'm actually single now so if the poster above is available..i am still up.

and to answer some questions above, my doctor is sending me to get a blood test done and i go back in 2 weeks. i am like the biggest pussy when it comes to needles and i would seriously rather get punched in the face than to get a test done. like f'serious! so even going to get the test done is going to be a stressful situation for me. but if i don't take it i know this is going to just drag on (bad dreams/having to face my fears/etc) i was taking a general b vitamin supplement that included b6, b12 (etc etc..) for awhile but stopped. maybe i should get back into it?

as for stressing over work and other problems, i feel like i'm under A LOT of pressure right now from family and myself. i have this huge exam to take and it's vital i pass because i need it for work. i stay up super late now because i am so busy during the day studying or going to class and virtually have zero time to think about anything else. so when i have downtime (like now) i'll check the net and then drift off to sleep...but probably waking up again in a couple of hours. UGH.

skinnypupp, can you explain what can cause a thyroid problem? or anyone who has this problem shed some light?

There's a lot of things that can cause thyroid problems, from Grave's Disease to cancer, to simple stress.

Wait for your blood work to come back, in all likelihood it's just stress. Pretty easy to take care of that.

Then you should look into the supplements that I mentioned. Just don't take them all at once

Start with DMAE, supplemented with Choline. Good shit!

I was huge into dreams for quite a while. There are many other supplements to mess around with... Piracetam was a favourite, but expensive, required a "prescription", and a bit too 'hardcore' for my liking.

IMO DMAE and Choline are the best 'softcore' way to do it. If you already have high anxiety though, it's not a good idea

I have tried, but never found the 'tricks' to work very well. They just come when they come, which luckily for me is quite often

i had the most crazy dream last night.

at my buddys house, all the windows had grills except for two. then this junky tries to climb in through one of the windows that didn't have a grill but we pushed him down. then there was a baby crying - apparently it was the junkys. then my friends n i were partying inside , when we hear noises. the junky came back with his buddies like 5 or 6 of them. his buddies were in camo gear with pistols. we flipped a table and blocked the unguarded window. pushed up a couch against the table as well - so it was harder to push over. we did not have guns. we defended ourselves using toilet paper ( I dont know how it happened ). we went on the roof ( dont know how ) n we threw toilet paper like how u do it in highschool , so it drapes n stuff. then a buddy of mine called 911. after a little while swat came down , and sniped out the junkys buddies. and then i woke up...

Hmmm.... I used to experience what you have. Not from school but from work related. I would wake up in sweat and my hear is pounding against my chest and heavy breath. I would have no memory of my dreams though. This happen during a time when my old company is laying people left and right. Not to mention during that time I was having issue with my gf and family as well so that didn't help.

During that time I took tyneol to help me sleep lol (yes that super strong ones that will put a cow to sleep). It help a bit. To be honest I have no idea how I stop having those issue. I think I just stop thinking about it and it went away.

Try not to think about anything stressful before you go to sleep. Read a book or listen to some relaxing music should help.

an ability which can take years, if ever, to develop, i'm sure. but what an amazing ability it would be. the mind and its perception of reality is a fascinating topic

I agree with the mind being a fascinating topic.. That along with how the human body actually works is one thing I could never get sick of learning about or even talking about.
This one girl I know just finished her pych degree and we can sit there for hours talking about the brain.. lol

what's a dream that's really cloudy (can't really remember details) but when it happens like a week or so after that it reminds you that you dreamed it before/kinda knows what happens?

ie. dreaming about going in a coffee shop drinking coffee and bumping into a friend that you haven't seen for ages and then a few months it actually happens

I get that a lot, sometimes it is kind of annoying that when it happens (after the dream) you can't do anything about it but to realize it.

Actually it happened to me several times, well at least that's what i think. It's like in a particular situation, i suddenly recall that it ever happened to me somewhere sometime but i can't remember when and where...it's like i've seen something like this or been in this siituation before, then i realize that i had it in my dream..weird

Read up about dreams. If you understand what psychologists think of dreams, you might be able to better diagnose yourself on the source of your bad dreams.
