Devils acquire Kovalchuk in trade with Atlanta

NEWARK, New Jersey (Reuters) - New Jersey have landed high-scoring wing Ilya Kovalchuk in a trade with the Atlanta Thrashers, the Devils announced on their website on Thursday.

Kovalchuk arrives in New Jersey with defenseman Anssi Salmela, while rookie forward Niclas Bergfors, defenseman Johnny Oduya and junior prospect Patrice Cormier were sent to the Thrashers along with a first round draft pick.

I don't know why anyone would actually want Cormier anymore

Steve Downie's track record is worse than Cormier's and he's still playing in the NHL.

Kovalchuk turned down the 12 year $101million contract Atlanta offered him, instead he was asking for the maximum of 20% of the salary cap.. Atlanta said no because that would slow down the development and potentially lose their young players.
they treated him like royalty and he still screwed the organization

Can't blame a guy that wants to win. Maybe Atlanta should've surrounded him with good talent, they had 8 years to do so and it was pretty much a one man show ever since Savard and Heatley left Atlanta.
