Honestly, a lot of BMW customers buy the car for its quality and brand image, not for the handling. Just look at Richmond I see girls driving 335i's all the time and FWD is definitely safer for them (and for other motorists on the streets as well!). I was pretty choked too when Mercedes came out with the FWD B-class, but I guess their target consumers for the car won't appreciate the excitement of RWD.
