Buying something off ebay

I dont really deal with ebay that much so i was hoping someone could shed some light for me. Im thinking about buying something off ebay thats coming from the states its worth about $1600. I was wondering about how much tax or brokerage fees am i expecting to pay on that amount and is there any way around it ? thanks.

Depends on the item and where it's made in.

If it's coming from the states and into Canada, prepare to get raped by UPS, Fedex, etc. on brokeage fees!

Make sure the seller ships it by USPS, otherwise don't buy it or have it shipped to Point Roberts and go pick it up yourself.

Someone on another car forum shipped me fog lights from NYC valued at $75 by UPS, I had to pay like $40 in taxes/brokerage fees.

Go USPS (equivalent Canada Post). UPS sucks, better luck with FedEx or Purolator.
I've been charged duties on some packages even with USPS, but it's usually just for taxes. Nothing as bad as UPS can charge.

The brokerage will be dependent on your value of your item.

pick up at US and just pay for duties.

i bought thousands of dollars from US and as long as you have a receipt and be nice and tell the truth, you'll be just slapped with a fee whcih is just duties. (assuming what you're buying is legal and has duties and not safety equipment)

IF YOU SHIP EXPIDATED AND NOT GROUND YOU WILL NOT GET CHARGED WITH "BROKERAGE"

And stop mistaking duties and taxes for brokerage, people!

always ask item to be shipped by USPS into Canada. If they don't, then send it to the letter carrier and you pick up and declare at the border.

http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/shi...clearance.html

If shipping by UPS Standard, you would pay:
$72.25 brokerage fee
$80 GST
$112 PST
? Duty (Depends on item)

If you ship by UPS Express or higher, you would pay:
$0 brokerage fee
$80 GST
$112 PST
? Duty (Depends on item)

I've bought some things off ebay.
If the seller ships via USPS, you generally will not get charged any fees when it gets to your house.
If the item is shipped via UPS or Fedex, you will be charged an enormous amount of fees.

Stay safe and get your items shipped with USPS
