Samurai Sushi @ Cambie St.

Just wondering if anyone's been to the Samurai Sushi that's near Oakridge Mall.

I'm hearing/reading mixed reviews from it. Some saying the sushi's not bad, has very large servings, and extremely cheap. But others say the sushi is terrible and/or unsafe, likely due to being under Vietnamese management (?).

I, on the other hand, just want something cheap. Plus Samurai is extremely nearby my place. And as much as I heavily appreciate good-quality sushi, I wouldn't mind this being not top quality as long as it's easily accessible, good-priced and edible.

However, I do care about it being safe to eat though.

Any takes?

It's probably safe although I wouldn't doubt they have unsafe refridgeration units for the fish.

I just wouldn't eat it because it's GARBAGE. Eat some real fucking food.

It isn't the best sushi around town. But I've eaten there, and the Fraser one, plenty of times and its cheap and I have never gotten sick from it.

Durrann 04-25-2010 08:33 AM

i've never gotten sick from there as well

the sushi is edible
big ass portions for good price

depends what kind of eater u are
if ur picky then u definitely think its garbage

at first i loved it,
cheap price huge portions but now..kinda got sick of it.

i think u'll like it the first few times u try it

Samurai Sushi is a god damn horror story. Why anyone likes that place is beyond me, but I'm really open to listening.

From the moment you walk in, you notice a sickly smell of rotten sushi permeating the air. Smells like sweat mixed with Nigiri Sushi. Eating in is not a comfortable experience with the Vietnamese ladies taking your order like they've done the same job for 40 years. If you do sit at the bar then you see the insane amount of pre-made rolls just chilling on the table.

It's even worse when you order take out. If you do decide to order takeout, make sure its something you pick up right away.

The pre-made rolls that sit there with no refrigeration is what gets me. (Even the rolls that have uncooked elements to it, like the Alaska Roll)

If you like massive portions of low-grade salmon sashimi, then by all means, go for it. Their California Roll isn't bad, very large with lots of flavor. I had their chopped scallop roll, fishly as hell...food poisoning much?

Bottom line, if you want really low quality, large portioned sushi with reasonable prices that has a chance that it might get you sick, then go for it. If you want to feed some people you don't care about, then order a party tray and be done with it. Otherwise, there are many other sushi joints in town that are of much higher quality. People that like this place haven't tried other sushi.

i always eat at the fraser one. like you, i don't care if its top quality either but yea its really cheap and large sushi. just make sure fish is cold

trancehead 04-25-2010 11:51 AM

definitely a case of quantity over quality.

SkippyLang 04-25-2010 03:13 PM

^ yeah, but it's not THAT bad. Cheap okay-quality food. Get take out and eat it somewhere else.

misteranswer 04-25-2010 03:32 PM

Just try it yourself. If you like it, keep going. If you don't, stop. Simple as that.

palepilsenpin0y 04-25-2010 03:34 PM

Ayt thanks for the insight guys.

Will definitely try it out at least once when I'm starvin' like marvin', but with somewhat low expectations. Haha and I guess I'll get it for take out as well then.

Cheers.

Anyone who enjoys eating low quality thick cut sashimi is beyond me.

When you're a poor starving student, it seems mighty delicious. Good bang for buck!

Senna4ever 04-25-2010 06:27 PM

Actually, due to their high turnover rate, the sashimi is quite fresh. The thick cut kills it, as does their use of Atlantic Salmon.

Word. Sometimes too 'fresh'. Nothing like biting into a frozen piece of Tuna.

i;d stay the fuck away from it, unless u wonna take the risk of getting sick

waddy41 04-25-2010 09:50 PM

Why don't you try Sushi Garden or Sushi King instead.

They also offer larger portions and their food is decent for the price..

Negative. Sushi Garden's portions are slightly smaller (but much higher quality). Sushi King is much cleaner and portions are also huge, but their rice is terrible. Very packed to together.

I definitely prefer the 'looseness' of Sushi Garden's rice.

Senna4ever 04-25-2010 10:31 PM

^^^ Horrendous plating and the sushi chef has absolutely no pride in appearance. Wow.

m3thods 04-25-2010 11:29 PM

tried it. it was ok, but i won't go back. didn't like the pre-made rolls hanging out, and they had A LOT of pre-ordered orders, with a few made 15 minutes early judging by the time on the receipts.

like stated there are some better "cheap sushi" options. my vote's for sushi garden lougheed, but it's always too busy to eat in, hence me always ordering out.

twitchyzero 04-25-2010 11:35 PM

i eat there occasionally
dont think i've ever gotten sick
turnover is really high so if you go during meal time it's pretty fresh
yeah low-quality but student budget ftw
