Vancouver Parking Bylaws

Woke up Friday morning with my car missing from where I parked it the evening before. I've parked in this spot countless times over the past 2 years always without issue.

I always thought minimum parking distance was 5m from the intersection, like 5m from fire hydrant, but apparently its 6m from an intersecting sidewalk (if there is a sidewalk). If no sidewalk, then its actually 9m from the intersection. Real eye opener for me, 6m from sidewalk is SOOO much space. All these numbers have got to be a pain in the ass to remember, not sure if other municipalities operate on the same guidelines.

More here: http://vancouver.ca/engsvcs/parking/...ned.htm#corner
Another interesting/odd one. At least 1.5m clear from either side of garbage cans, that's like 5 feet. Remember that the next time you're at a Chinese restaurant with cramped parking and garbage can out back

Final tally: $105.xx to get my car back, so that I can THEN pay the $50 parking fine. Thought I got off lucky with the $105 bill including my ticket, like how getting towed in Richmond the tow company includes the cost of the ticket when recovering your vehicle.

Weird. In the books when I studied it, the distance was 6m each way from the fire hydrant. Unless that got changed recently to 5m, I'm not sure. But I always do 6 just because I was trained to be that far.

People park closer than 9m to intersecting streets and closer than 1.5m to driveways all the time on residential streets. Bylaw tends to turn a blind eye to residential streets.

I bet you were parked in a commercial or mixed use residential/commercial area.

Nope, strictly residential area on a smaller sidestreet. Like I said, maybe it was just wrong place at the wrong time, but I've parked there countless times in the last 2 years issue free. Maybe just call me lucky in the past, but lesson learnt.

I have seen other cars on the block getting ticketed for parking too close to the stop sign also. Getting a ticket would've sucked enough, getting towed over and missing the car in the morning before going to work was just an extra kick to the balls.

For you guys who remember what alliteration is, it's easy to remember this because of the "F" and "S" sound in five, fire, six, and stop.

Parking closer than 6m from nearest edge of an intersecting sidewalk.

Got ticketed around 6pm, not sure when the tow happened as it is not documented. Car was gone before 8am the next morning

^ if the ticket was issued by parking enforcement, the little handheld device they use to issue the ticket has an option to call a tow truck automatically with a push of a button.

Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

That's not something they actively look for. There's only one or two bylaw officers who will actually patrol and look for that particular offense. The odds are you were towed because someone complained. (They will probably complain again.)
