Less than 100 people have been laid off

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Pixar Canada is closing its Vancouver studios.

The company says the closure will affect fewer than 100 people.

“The team at Pixar Canada is incredibly talented and we are so proud of the excellent work we have produced there. However, as we look at the creative and business needs of our studio, we’ve made the decision to refocus our efforts and resources under one roof in Emeryville and will be closing the studio in Vancouver,” the company says in an emailed statement.

Local digital expert with Zeros 2 Heroes Media, Matt Toner, says no one saw this coming. “Pixar as a studio is about as blue a chip as you can have. I think that when you look at it, it’s symbolic of the bigger forces that are always at work in the entertainment industry. The trick is, can our city, can our industry in Vancouver re-absorb these people that are being laid off. You have 100 talented, bright, probably young people that can work any place in the world, can we keep them here?”

Toner says the city needs to develop an industrial strategy that can respond to changes in the entertainment industry. “You don’t want these folks that have earned their spurs in Vancouver going to work somewhere like Montreal.”

Pixar’s Gastown location opened in 2010 and produced a slate of short films including Air Mater, Small Fry and Partysaurus Rex.
