| Zipang Sushi
Did a search and didn't find anything about this place so here we go!
Several months back, Alphamale told me about Zipang Sushi on Main street. He went there with a friend and told me about the "interesting" sushi they had. I had tried to visit Zipang Sushi on several occassions, however to my dismay, they weren't opened that day or I arrived way to late only to find them closed.
Today, I found a reason to stop by as my brother had some kind of awards ceremony at school and I took him out as a gesture for his hard work at school. We weren't exactly too hungry so we ordered the following dishes:
1. Salmon Sashimi (6 pieces) - To my surprise, it was wild salmon, not farmed. The cut was great and was the salmon was fresh. Absolutely delicious.
2. Ikashiso roll - I love ikashiso and again, the ika was fresh and the shiso leaf was fragrant. Portion of the ika could have been a tad bigger as I've had at Maruwa, however, the fresh leaf made up for it.
3. Chopped scallop sushi - My brother and I had a piece each. Straight up chopped scallop and mayo with no tobiko. The portion of chopped scallop was generous. This place takes the cake so far when it comes to chopped scallop sushi in my books.
4. Tako Yaki - My brother wanted to try this and so we did. I think there were maybe 6 in quantity? Size of the tako yaki was fairly big and it came with mayo, diced green onions and benito flakes for dipping. Overall, it was not bad however, I was hoping that it would have been served promptly as it was just warm when we got it. Not to mention, there wasn't a lot of tako and more filler to be had so perhaps my expectations were too high.
5. Seafood okonomiyaki - There was cabbage, shrimp, tako and scallops to be found in this dish. Unfortunately, my brother and I decided there was just way too much sauce and the whole thing was covered in it. If it weren't for the sauce, this would have been an excellent dish.
I ordered some sushi for my sister to go at the end as she could not join us. The menu has your typical standard Japanese fare and some "interesting" special rolls which did not really trigger my appetite. Total with tax and tip came to $40 even. Service was attentive and food came out in a reasonable manner. Overall, I would give this place an 8/10. Individually, for sushi items - 9/10 and maybe a 6.5 or even a 7 for the cooked food. Small little joint on Main Street whose primary patrons consist of Hipsters/Scenesters who come in, talk about interior design and art, or delve into their passion for Kafka's literature. Seating is limited so either come early or come an hour or two prior to close. Zipang Sushi + menu

You should try DREAM SUSHI. 4401 Main Street at 28th Ave
Vancouver, BC V5V 0A2
It's near Zipang and it's really really good. Pretty cheap as well!
Got 100% in reviews ---> http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/14/15076...ushi-Vancouver
I love that place. I eat there frequently.
Here's the menu for the prices ---> http://www.yummyweb.com/show_store.php?sid=449
You can have a decent meal for under 10 bucks. About $15 tops if you really want to indulge.
$6.50 from 11:30am to 3:00pm for a special lunch deal which includes two dishes (rolls, rice bowls, etc.) and miso soup.
$12.95 for a dinner special which includes three dishes, salad, and miso soup.
[9.5/10] overall from me

I don't really trust Urban Spoon for the most part but I'll try it out next time I'm in the area.

But take it from me, it's great!

Depending on what you order and what kinda specials they have, Zipang it's a solid 8/10. If you order things that fulfill your preferences, I think it's a good 9/10. Key thing is that everything they serve is fresh.
I'm just not a fan of hipsters.

Haven't tried it myself but everyone I know that has gone here loved it! Posted via RS Mobile | Been there 2 times, nothing really special, food is just normal. if you want your sushi to come with a candle light, go there. Price is high if you are comparing korean style sushi places like sushi garden.
I would go to TOSHI (main &16th), Fuji (north road) or Ajisai (kerrisdale) for fresher seafood (japanese market only fish) and traditional dish and sushi rolls.
ZiPang Customers are mostly young caucasian family with kids, main street/commercial cool hippie young people. ( my own observation)

The Owner of Zipang sushi is the same owner as the Takoyaki stand at previous Night markets. He's not at any Night market stalls anymore |

It's worth trying and by no means, this is THE BEST sushi ever. I rather enjoyed it but as wasabisashimi said, he went twice and found the food to be rather normal. And truthfully, it was. It has at least a standard, unlike some Korean or Chinese places. Better sushi can be had, but to reiterate, it is worth trying at least once.

those pictures look pretty good. as a rule of thumb for myself, if the place serves you the yellow ginger, the quality will be above average.
this is still a 100% correct observation for my experiences so far. =)

I went there today for lunch with Momma Crayona and I fairly enjoyed it. Everything was fresh and yummy. Granted we only had 3 things cause my mom isn't a big eater but I liked it and I'd go again. Prices were fair too. Posted via RS Mobile |

I am no sushi/Japanese food connesieur, however, from my (limited) understanding is that the pink ginger is typically the bulk stuff you get out of Thailand and is not fresh.
The yellow ginger (again, due to my limited understanding) is generally made fresh and in-house. That being said, if a place is going to serve the yellow ginger, it generally suggests that a level of quality is maintained in regards to the food they serve.
Somebody who is more knowledgable on the topic of Japanese/Sushi will correct me.
