Chiropractors

I had a strain in my neck/back a couple weeks ago from the gym, so I went to a welness centre requesting an RMT, and ended up getting looked at by a chiropractor, and then she start telling me how my spine is out of alignment, how one side of my body is slightly stronger than the other, bla bla bla

Next thing you know she's requesting i go on a 12-15 session program 3 times a week, really felt like a cash grab.

Whats everyones thoughts on chiropractors? I've been told by other people that as soon as you stop seeing them and spending the half hour a day stretching that they recommend that your body goes back to how it was before.

Chiropractors don't really do too much imo.

They're like a glorified masseuse, minus the happy endings.

I have a bad back, so I saw a chiropractor a few times, they just kind of adjusted it a bit each time, but honestly I don't feel a difference.

I'd agree, total cashgrab IMHO.

I know my girlfriend forbids me from seeing a chiropractor, because of the risk of vertebral artery dissection with the work they do... She's seen cases in the hospital of people in bad shape because of it, and even though it's after seeing a chiro, the chiro seems to always deny that they may have caused it...

I've had patients complain to me of their chiropractors doing some weird stuff, pressing really hard on their abdomen or rib cage or something, and causing their acid reflux problems which were long gone, to reappear again...

So yea, i would really be interested in hearing more info about what they do, and such... since all I usually get is bad press on them... Even better is if a chiropractor or chiropractic student chimed in...

thanks for your opinion, what do you do?

I'm just very hesitant and skeptical when they start doing stuff to my spine... I'm thinking it could do more harm than good

Well, I wouldn't really say it's my opinion on chiropractors because I really don't have adequate information to form my own opinion on them. I just hear things that people feed back to me, which is why I'd like to hear someone in the know chime in. I work as a Pharmacist, and the girlfriend is finishing medical school, so that's why we see these sorts of things at work...

I've dealt with 2 severely herniated disc's in my lower back for at least the last 10 years.

While the chiro i was working with @ the begining couldn't really help (once he realized he couldn't help he sent me to UBC for CT scans which identified the disc dmg) the way he explained how chiro helps makes perfect sense to me.

Basically, they are just helping the body heal itself. 'Adjusting' the spine or whatever joint, etc... allows for better blood flow and movement. This in turn allows the body to do its thing more efficiently.

3 years ago i got involved in downhill mountain biking. Learning on the north shore isn't that forgiving. Big crashes... Whistler is also extremely close... Even bigger crashes...

I found a new chiro that specializes in sports medicine. I'd say he's a cross between a physio and chiro sorta dr.

It was great for the injuries I was sustaining.

This is the place, just next to grandville island. owner and guy i was visiting is Ian

definately recommended

there is a new BC back center thing on 152 and HWY 10 they advertise on the radio, suppose to mimick the mayo clinic and their techniques

all chiropractors are the same and it's not like your back can get fixed with 1 major adjustment, they do the same adjustment over and over until tension is released in your back

about 4 years ago i was getting my dirt bikes ready for summer and i was outback trying to kick start them, on the 2nd kick i tweaked my back so bad i had to go inside and lay down on my couch for the next 6 hours and if there was a fire in my house i wouldnt have been able to get up

for the next 2 days all i could do was slouch over and crawl out of bed, went to my local chiro and after the first session i was back upright and about 6-7 sessions later i was better than i was before

Chiropractors are legit imo

It was about 35 dollars a session for about I think 30 minutes. It's been awhile.
Before you can start any program, I needed to have an initial consultation which I think was about 150 which includes xrays.

I'm in the same situation. I feel as if my back is not properly aligned and was recommended by a friend of mine to visit a chiropractor. She said it helped and so far, so good but I'm iffy on this.

Ok, so I'm just realizing this now....

You're having troubles feeling comfortable going to see a Chiropractor, even though they dedicate upwards of 5 years of their life and 10's of thousands of dollars in education. So instead you come onto a internet website to get advice from random people who know fuck all?

Oh no, a few people sustain injurys from Chiro, so in the the millions and millions of people that go to Chiro, there are a FEW serious side-affects. Look at ANYTHING and find me something that doesn't share similiar issues.

Also, in regards to "going back to normal" after visiting and doing said exercises. The exercises your given should be done FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, not just until you feel better or of fucking course your body is gunna get fucked again.

I've had better luck with Physio and Massage therapy.

THAT SAID, if you're problem is persistant, ask your doctor to get you some Xrays or an ultra sound. I've had a persistant injury to my shoulder, a previous Dr kept sending me to physio for. My new doc is an Ortho specialist when he's not in the family practice though, he took one look at it and refered me for an ultrasound as he thinks I have calcium deposits and the physio - trying to make me work through it to strengthen the joint - is actually causing more damage to the ligiments.

i find that chiro places that also have massage therapists, physios, and acupuncture in one location to be better. actually i can't say because i've never went, but i would assume so because then they can encompass more different techniques to improve your health? i plan to see a chiro next week and i'll post back in a month or so to let you know how i feel.

the last place that i went to had a bunch of different stuff. I originally asked for an apt for a massage therapist, and partway through my apt I realized i was setup with a chiropractor.
