Good Place for Japanese Food?

Looking for a good Japanese place to eat in Metro Vancouver area. Japanese-owned is a plus. Any suggestions?

Sushi Hachi if you like sashimi. imo their rolls are mediocre at best.
Tsukiji is ok if you like variety. But it's not Japanese owned.

Both are in Richmond and pretty close to each other.

plz dont recommend ppl to sushi hachi

their nigiri is small, chefs recommendation sashimi is a major rip off. Tiny little pieces that i can barely see with my eyes

i was hella disappointed with their blue fin tuna

Hanako is a better choice

Fiji Sushi in Coquitlam. Japanese owned. Prices for the food are a tad more pricey than normal.

Seto, Ichiro, Maruwa in Richmond - all run by Japanese folks. Fujiya and Izumi-Ya for deli-style take out.

Please refer to the best sushi in town thread. It has a rangeful of ideas and suggestions that doesn't just focus on "sushi" despite the title.

And fuji sucks balls compared to what it use to be. The quality and effort went downhill after that hardcore japanese head waitress retired. If you want a good jap place in "metro vancouver" check out isami? Aacross from the staples centre by metro. But really, I'd travel a little further for something better. I love Kimura, zipang, guu, hapa, and seto.

japanese food is pretty general but ill throw out some suggestions

strictly sushi - sushi hachi, aji-sai
little bit of everything - ichiro, takeya, seto, kiyo, gyo-o
yoshoku-ya - yashoku-ya, hi genki, bonqula
izakaya - kingyo, guu, hapa (all except richmond), nanchuu
ramen - santouka, kintaro, motomachi shokudo
robata- zukkushi

Fuji Sushi sucks. They use farmed Atlantic salmon and also use some cheap, shitty soy sauce that is totally unsuited to sushi. I'm guessing they use that Chinese Kim Lan soy sauce which has a little bit of sugar in it - YUK! I guess most people won't know the difference though...

My personal picks would be:
Shiro on 15th & Cambie
Tokiwa on Oak & 22nd
Kingyo on Denman
G-Men Ramen
Benkei Ramen
Yuji's Japanese Tapas for some fusion.

That's what's wrong with so many of the so called "Japanese" restaurants recently. Sashimi should be bite sized, not eaten in two bites! It's about balance, but for people who think California Rolls are authentic Japanese food, it doesn't matter....
