The Avengers (2012)

Edward Norton will reportedly not be back as the Hulk for The Avengers, despite his self-professed eagerness to reprise his role as Dr. Bruce Banner.

According to HitFix, Marvel has decided to drop Norton and replace him with an unspecified unknown for the Avengers movie -- a lineup the studio is said to be planning to reveal at this month's San Diego Comic-Con.

The site says they're trying to determine "exactly how far apart the Marvel offer and the Norton camp are in terms of money, but even in early conversations, it sounds like a deal could be made here, and simply wasn't."

No exact reason was expressly given for Marvel's decision to not bring back Norton, but the star and Marvel had a notorious go-around while making The Incredible Hulk.

So, if these rumors pan out, what do you guys think of an unknown playing Bruce Banner in The Avengers? Sound off in the Comments below.

UPDATED: Marvel Studios sent a statement to HitFix confirming their earlier scoop that Norton will not be back for The Avengers. Marvel honcho Kevin Feige informed the site: "Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert [Downey], Chris [Hemsworth], Chris (Evans), Sam [Jackson], Scarlett [Johansson], and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks."

Damn that sucks. Part of the coolness of combining the characters from the different movies into one was the consistency. Also I liked Norton as Bruce Banner.

Anyone else think Chris Evans is an odd choice for Captain America?

ScizzMoney 07-12-2010 05:45 AM

I think Evans is actually a pretty good choice for Captain America. He's a better actor than most give him credit for.

604Sparda 07-12-2010 07:14 AM

Evans seems kinda young and immature as Captain America...
Hes a good actor but I just dont see it.

JKam 07-12-2010 11:03 AM

I just think it's weird because he was the human torch. Otherwise I think he'll make a good Cap. I just hope the ages of everyone is realistic

JKam 07-13-2010 09:06 PM

I assume they'll change captain America's look in the Avengers as the one in that poster above looks to be made for the WW2 era.

In fact I heard that the entire movie will take place in WW2 and I assume in the Avengers is when they find him frozen in the icebergs many years later.

palepilsenpin0y 07-14-2010 01:09 PM

FUCK! Very unhappy at the fact that Norton was pulled from The Avengers.

He was an excellent Bruce Banner and he was one of the key actors I wanted to see in the movie.

Terrible terrible move in my opinion. I'm extremely disappointed :(

DanHibiki 07-14-2010 04:56 PM

Well it all started when in they were making the Hulk. Norton had some creative control over the movie and he wanted to explore the inner-struggles of Bruce Banner/Hulk while the others wanted to have more action. After this disagreement, the upset Norton refused to help promote the movie.

Then it just went down hill from there on.

They're going with the Ultimate Universe version of Cap.

So he has that belt even in present day?

JKam 07-15-2010 02:09 PM

yep. Thats how Cap looks all the time in Ultimate Avengers/Universe minus the chin strap.

Jsunu 07-15-2010 02:15 PM

Rumor has it that Mark Ruffalo would be replacing edward norton as the hulk.. hmm i dunno.

Even worst than Eric Bana

DanHibiki 07-15-2010 05:43 PM

I hope they make his costume different in the WW2 era as opposed to the present day one much like the Ultimate Avengers movies back in 2006

List of potential Bruce Banners.

I agree with the first two actually.

And Eric Bana > Mark Ruffalo

Who cares about bruce banner. As long as the hulk looks good. The last hulk cg was better than the first but still needs to look bigger and more freakish

yeah, that's weird for me as well...

as long as he doesn't play Cap with the same carefree attitude that he did with the Torch.

but i'd still rather have someone else. someone with the serious attitude that Cap can have. no nonsense, kick ass, straight as an arrow, etc.

I suggest you guys watch the Ultimate Avengers animated movies, it's actually pretty good:

There's also Ultimate Avengers 2 but it's not as good.

Also there's another new animated Avengers movie that's coming out soon:

Marvel continues to fill the ranks of its Avengers.

Actress Cobie Smulders, best known as Robin Scherbatsky on CBS’s Emmy-winning comedy “How I Met Your Mother,” has joined the cast of director Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble "The Avengers," slated to hit theaters next summer.

Smulders will play Maria Hill, an agent for the quasi-military espionage agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D and led by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Like Jackson, Smulders is likely to be contracted for a nine-movie deal that will allow the character to cross-over into multiple Marvel films.

In the comics, Hill is known for her forceful personality and a hard edge similar to that of Fury. The character ultimately takes over S.H.I.E.L.D. and features prominently in the popular “Civil War” and “Secret Invasion” storylines.

The big-budget action film will mark a change of pace for the Canadian actress who has largely worked in comedies and television appearances.

In addition to her work on “Mother,” her television appearances include “The L Word,” “Smallville,” “Andromeda,” and “Tru Calling.”

Prior to settling on Smulders, Marvel recently conducted screen tests with several actresses on the short list to play Hill. They included Morena Baccarin ("V", "Firefly"), Jessica Lucas ("Cloverfield"), and Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Scott Pilgrim vs. The World").

The addition of Smulders helps even the gender odds in the male-skewed cast of "The Avengers."

Alongside Jackson and Smulders, the film will see Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson and Clark Gregg reprise their “Iron Man” roles as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Black Widow and Agent Coulson, respectively.

Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans, who will appear in theaters this summer as Thor and Captain America, respectively, will also star, and Mark Ruffalo will assume the role of Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk, last played onscreen by Edward Norton.

Rounding out the cast is Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Town,” “The Hurt Locker”) as Hawkeye.

“The Avengers” will hit theaters on May 4, 2012.

“How I Met Your Mother” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
