SL 600 fs on craigslist

So the ad reads:

Quote:
MUST BE SOLD THIS WEEKEND.
112,000 KILOMETERS FULLY LOADED.
CHEAPEST 600SL IN CANADA.
V-12 AUTOMATIC CONVERTIBLE AND HARDTOP.
LOST PARKING SPOT NEEDS TO GO.
CASH ONLY.
BEST BUY IN BC

The price for this car is $3500. Is this totally ? How fucked up would the car have to be for that to not be a good deal? Am I going to be mugged on site? Anyways, I saw this and thought it's extremely tempting but possibly too good to be true. Wanted to know what RS thinks about this, also someone should get it if it's real.

^ oh :/
Well, thanks. As soon as you said that my brain was like "ofcourse". Wishful thinking, it's a lot easier thinking about the one guy that wins the lottery rather than a millions who don't.

Not really, remember that it IS a 17 year old car. I'd be expecting something more like $6k but actually it's not impossible.

If you are serious, ask for the VIN and run your usual gamut of checks, before checking it out in person.

Dunno about the rest of you but let's face it, half of the stuff on CL is retardedly overpriced. These things aren't work 12k (quick search on CL) imo. This guy may have put a lower price so that it actually sells?

you have to watch out with some of these Merc R129's. You gotta buy the right one its going to be a gigantic money pit. If someone actually gets this, either buy it for a beater if its running or part that bitch.

+1

I'm 100% sure its from japan, expecially with those wheels. Got to watch out with some of these Jap imports. Another common failure with these cars is the hydraulic pump for the convertable roof. May reflect why the car is so cheap.

It's definitely a money pit, I would think the insurance wouldn't be "right" and it has a 6L v12, can't imagine you'd get good mpg. But never the less, seems like it could be a good investment. A part of me automatically thinks a person who lives in whiterock with an SL600 must take good care of it. I think the price is because a combination of the person could be so ballin, they don't care if they make money from it with the unavailablity to store it anywhere else, but the catch is you have to get it today (it was posted yesterday). Though it's tempting, the whole sceanario being a combination of convenient events for the buyer makes me think it can't be, and if it was it still might not be a good decision to be so hasty. I guess I want to be reassured that this would be a bad or at least a risky decision not worth making so I don't have to think back and wonder about it.

I did a search on the numbers, and it seems like both numbers provided in the ad are curbers. If you don't know what curbers are they're people who buy and sell cars for profit in their backyard, and does not have a business/dealer license.

Avoid “curbers” – people who sell motor vehicles for profit, but without a motor dealer license. By law, anyone selling motor vehicles in BC must have a dealer license from the Motor Vehicle Sales Authority. Curbers operate illegally. They can cheat people by doing things such as turning back the odometer to make it look like a vehicle has lower mileage than it really has. Curbers get vehicles from BC and elsewhere in Canada and the US. They may hide the fact that a vehicle comes from eastern Canada or the US and has serious but hidden rust problems. And they may charge extremely high and illegal interest rates. There are many types of curbers. Some are mechanics who have repair facilities and also sell vehicles. Some curbers have 6 or 7 cars parked on their front lawn with “for sale” signs. To learn how to spot a curber, watch the videos at www.mvsabc.com.
More information can be found here -->
http://www.cba.org/bc/public_media/automobiles/197.aspx

If you really like the car and want to find out for yourself, I'd suggest you go check the car out in person. Write down the VIN, look for rust, accidents, if its an out of province/country car etc, and use it to your advantage in negotiating. If he's only selling the car for $3500, my guess is that he got the car around $2000-$2500. I looked at a car from a curber once, and told me the car had only 75000 kms and no accidents. I looked at the car, and the car was in miles, and the odometer showed 75000, so it was obviously 75,000 miles, not kms, and the bumper was a cheap bumper that didn't really. match the car's colour.

Just be prepared to have your wallet take a hit if you do decide to get the car though... those cars are hell expensive to fix...

i called him, he says the car was hot wired, doesnt have keys and cant be started right now. i mean wtf, buy one of these V12 monsters without even hearing the engine running?

it needs work done to it, mostly electrical stuff. probably a couple grand at least. and it's imported from japan.

good luck to the buyer.

Awesome cars and the 600 is the pinnacle of merc performance for that generation but they are HUGE money pits and aint worth shit if they aren't in perfect working order.
3g's is dirt cheap and well worth looking into but its not a honda so don't expect honda reliability and fuel economy that thing is an ecological disaster when it comes to fuel economy.

i wouldn't buy that type of car thats not in running condition, and needs lots of work. Make the right investment and buy a proper R129.

I will be selling mine soon. A 1990 500SL Jap import, very clean, with only 49,000kms.

Just curious, but by that definition wouldn't most private sales be illegal?

look at it this way, it's $3500 now, but u'll probably spend about $6500 in the next 2 years fixing the problems with it. Is it worth $10k to you? Power steering pump... $3k, brake booster....$2.5k.

If you're not willing to spend more money on repairs than the car is worth, dont buy old germans. There's a reason why old mercs, are worth less than similiar year'ed civics that cost a fraction when new.

^ Well put. Yeah, glad that's settled.
I'll just keep on saving for that slk, probably a 230 but I might wait out for the 320 around next summer or later. It's been my dream car for a decade, saw one of my dad's friends pull up in it. Ever since I've always seen old guys in "young" luxury sports cars and see something wrong with it. I always think "is that how life is? You dream when you're young and unless your parents spoil you, you can only have those things when you're old?" I know things come up in life, but even if it's a mistake.. I still want it, I have few responsibilities right now. Btw I've wanted an SLK for a while, I've been saving for 6 months and recently found a toy model SLK230 by where I keep my shoes. I've had it since I was a kid and didn't realise it was an slk. Coincidence? Or power of suggestion.

Actually, probably much more -- the parts and labor for Benz is a fortune. German cars are also electrical nightmares after the warranty runs out, let alone 20 years ago!

I guess it means if you're not doing it consistently for profit it's legal?

The curber I went to never changed the names on the cars he bought it, so it wouldn't show another ownership on the car, and only owned for a month or two.

ofcourse it depends on the person, but i've bought a few cars that i've decided to sell afterwards. For small profit or the break even. Even without changing the title name as long as you have all the paperwork ready and signed. There's no point of paying the taxes if you're not going to use the car.

So I was riding my bicycle the other day, and one of
these things passed me with effortless drama. When I
approached the guy at the red light, I acknowledged his
'600' tag with a "nod". I was smidget too late.

Personally, if one were to buy their girl something nice,
I'd recommend a '300'. Prolly a fair bit cheaper to maintain
and argueably just as posh.

SLK230? It just made a nice hollywood cameo but that was when
everything started going downhill.
