Got a parking ticket, should I dispute? I never disputed anything before, so I don't really know what to expect, and what are the chances of winning? Here's what happened: I was going to downtown to pick up my gf from work. I pulled into an alley area http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&sourc...,324.56,,0,6.2 and parked along the side, not obstructing traffic or anything. (I actually pulled in even deeper in that alley where it's not so narrow, you can't really see from this picture), and I wasn't in a "loading zone" or anything. I was literally there for less than 1 minute, and my gf was opening my car door to get into my car with my engine on when the parking ticket guy with his bicycle comes strolling by. Sees me, then decides to write me a ticket for $50. I don't really know how I would dispute this, or what I would be able to say. Because I understand stopping my car in a non-parking place could possibly warrant a parking ticket. But I've witnessed so many things worst, and people have gotten out of it, so I don't see why shouldn't I be able to. I've always been good with paying off speeding/parking tickets and fines and stuff and just sucked it up when I got caught for something. I'm not one of those typical whiners that whine and dispute every ticket/fine received. But this time, I really feel cheated and it's worth disputing. What do you guys think? |
Well... the sign says "No stopping except commercial vehicles". Since you're not a commercial vehicle... I think you're the one who's cheating.. and the exact reason why the sign is there in the first place. Suck it up, buttercup. |
what happens if you dont pay the ticket? |
pay or not paid |

What part of the sign do you not understand? It's a NO STOPPING zone, unless you're a commercial vehicle. Are you a commercial vehicle? No. Did you stop there in the zone? Yes. What is there to dispute? |

write it off to a "lesson on road signs" .. |
I think the OP feels as if he wasn't really parked and just pulled over there. |
if theres signs there that say no parking then pay it if theres no signs then dispute |

But the sign says NO STOPPING, not NO PARKING. |

I'm pretty sure 95% of people on RS that encountered what I did would feel the same way. It's like getting busted going 60km/h and expecting no one to feel cheaped out. I had another thread last year where I got a ticket from just waiting in a unpaid meter for 2 minutes and drove off, and some guy nabbed my plates and ended up mailing me a ticket. What if I was looking for change in my car? I don't really know where's the fine line of pulling over/parking, etc. If I had a flat tire, and pulled over, I probably would have gotten a ticket too. I guess I'll just pay up the $50. lol Quote:
Thumbsup too for having a good eye! I actually didn't see the sign. Just wondering, have you ever disputed a ticket before? Tickets are NEVER wrongly given under a "black and white law system" So why do people dispute, and why do some people win? Did hey use a loophole in the system, or just outrightly lied about the situation? or just gave it a shot, and hoped the officer didn't show up in court? |
offtopic but whatever, i'll still say it what if you had a popped tire and pulled over to a spot like that to replace your tire? do you get a ticket for that? |

isn't there a rule where , if there is a human in the driver seat, that patrollers can't give you a ticket. they must first ask you to move or pay up. |

The difference is: I didn't go online to ask if I should. I know it is wrong to dispute them, that I am wasting tax payers money and the courts' time. I always find it funny when people rant when they are obviously in the wrong. You're not going to win any support, just keep quiet, fight it, and hope for the best. |

Can a ticket be issued if there's a driver in the car? |
You got unlucky. No stopping means no stopping. Sounds like you got nailed by one of the guys on the bikes, and unfortunately that's all they do is ride through the alleys looking for vehicles stopped without commercial plates. They usually have zero tolerance. Besides, in your case, the sign was right there lol. At the end of the day, when it comes to all bylaw tickets, discretion is always up to the officer. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't. |
think of it this way, if everyone stopped in the alleys for their own personal reasons, it would be a freaking nightmare for the commercial vehicles that are trying to load and unload their stuff. yeah it's nazi, but i bet you'll never do it again, and i bet anyone who reads this is gonna think twice about it as well! |
If you decide to dispute it, remember to show up to court or there will be a warrant out for your arrest for failing to appear. |

^ doesn't work that way for bylaw tickets. |
really? they're gonna put a warrant out for you because you didn't show up to a court ruling that decided on a $50 parking ticket? seems pretty pointless to me. |
