This kind of blurs the line between health and fashion, but I thought I'd just throw it down here.

Hair Gel/Mud/Glue or whatever, I'm looking for a better product.

I've always used to cheap stuff growing up, but I want a bit more out of my product now.

The cheap stuff gets hard, cracks and flakes.
The slightly less cheap stuff still gets hard, and flakes still.

Ideally, I'm looking for something that shapes, but is still flexible (retouchable?).
I ride, so something that won't come off and gross up my helmet either.

Just thought you guys might have some suggestions on stuff to check out.

All are restylable and do not flake. the redken i like a lot because it gives a semi matte finish... not shiny but not dull.

have fun! expect to pay 15-20 bucks for each.. should last you a while though as you don't need a crap load like you would with fructis axe etc... also there are a couple places in richmond and metro that sell substantially cheaper than at hair salons.

dude, that shit dries before you can even style your hair properly.. and once its styled.. if you rub yoru hair in any why it gets soft and flaky... and not to mention, the stuff pulls out more hair than it holds

I use Gatsby Perfect Hold Wax with a bit of Gatsby Technical Design Clay. These are their "higher end" products compared to Moving Rubber. I also finish with hair spray, they last all day this way. Really I could probably get away with 2 days if I just add some water in the morning

+1 to gatsby. Tried several "western" brands like garnier/alberto etc but Gatsby does it so much better. Supposedly it's designed for asian hair so that's why it works so well. So if you're asian, you should try it lol.

It works fine for me, and I am not asian. Most of our customers aren't asian either. And I've never seen them claim it was for asian hair either. It's just a japanese product, so they of course only market to Japan.

The most important thing is to get the right product for your hair type, whether you are asian or not is irrelevant.

Well, the labels never say for what kind of hair type.
I've got really coarse hair that doesn't behave itself.

If I let it grow, it just 'fros out.

SkinnyPupp, are you a stylist???

The Gatsby stuff sounds interesting.
Will look into it, any local sources, or am I better off hunting it down online?

No, my wife runs a site that sells Japanese styling products, including Gatsby.

I am pretty familiar with their products.. If you let me know what your hair type/style is maybe I can help.

I found a place on 4th Ave and Arbutus that carries the first 3... not sure about the other ones. Prices seemed better than what I've seen around town. I can't remember the name, I'll head back and get a name if you're interested.

i found that i liked Uno (Red) more than the gatsby products. ive tried their wax and it wasnt for me..so i dunno

My hair is coarse, I wouldn't call it particularly healthy, but it's definitely not bad hair either.
Because of it's coarseness, I have always found myself leaning towards strong/stiff products.

doesnt it defeat the purpose of using he exp stuff if you finish with hairspray? you might as well use a supermarket hair cream.

also, along the lines of western stuff. you cant compare gatsby to say fructis and alberto... it is like comparing motomaster oil to mobil 1. have you tried woodys or american crew or lsb, redken etc...

just like you, i've been using the cheap stuff growing up as well xD. right now, i'm trying garnier fructis products. i'm actually liking the goo they have, i bought the mangahead one. but it really depends what type of hair style you're going for. if you have long hair, wax is the way to go. and for short like mine: i've been going for the taeyang hair style for quite a while and i use goo for it. if i wake up with a bad bedhead, i use goo. if my hair's normal, i use gel LOL

Not if you use good hairspray too. Some people may need it, others don't. It depends on the hair style. The wax/clay/whatever styles the hair, the hairspray keeps it in place.

I haven't used cheap hair products since high school. I used to use "Xtah" for a long time, then tried some "Osis" for a while, both salon brands. I switched to Gatsby a while ago, and am happy with the combo I am using.

Is there anywhere in Richmond or near Metrotown that has a good selection of Gatsby for a good price?

I saw on another thread that said T&T carries Gatsby but I've never seen it.

^ there's a store in crystal mall! i believe it's on the first floor when you enter. it has a lot of hair products there, there's a rack of them beside the cashier

Wow, I'm using the exact same product, and it's has the exact hard, crusty properties I've been describing.
I thought it would be a good step up from that cheap crap, but it's obviously not what I've been looking for.

I use both garnier fructis wax and hairspray, I also have short hair. Feels like the best combo and I only got it for 5$? Was on sale at superstore before

If you have short spikey hair like the typical CBC guy, there's no need for these styling clay wax stuff.
Your hair is too short to work with.

If you have asian honger/japanese/korea hair style, it's worth it to invest in Gatsby or something like that.
Be creative and have fun.

btw, buy Gatsby at the Cube in Aberdeen. It's the cheapest place I know of so far, at $13.
Some places could sell them for up to $20. Craigslist "Gatbsy" or "Gatsby Wax".
From time to time, I've seen ads with people selling brand new sealed ones for $10.
