I have chronic problems in this area. The pain where you're feeling it could actually be referred from a differant part of your shoulders, making figuring the injury out more diffecult than you might think it should be.

How long has it been bothering you? Have you been doing any unusually strenious activity? Sleeping badly?

Lots of things can cause pain in this area. First line of defence I find is aleve (for me it works better than advil) & hot/cold treatment. Yoga stretching works very very well for some people. Keep using it moderately and stretching it out, this is important with shoulder pain as frozen shoulder is not fun.

If the pain lingers for more than say 2 weeks or you're finding your movement is restricted or you find the pain is referring to your neck or arm you should go see your doctor (preferrably a sports med guy if you can, GPs tend to be all 'it's musclar take an advil and go away') and get an X-ray and ultrasound to make sure you have no structural problems aggrevating it. From there it's Physio if it's muscular or Chiropractic if it's spinal or off to the surgeon if it's joint related.

for some, the pain/discomfort can be caused by stress alone... for me, if i do not sleep well or am stressed, i notice the tension in my upper back... other than stress, you could have imbalances causes your back to get sore/get tense. see your doctor so he can refer you to a specialist.. if anything, google it and you will get some basic stretches/exercises to alleviate or manage this issue. stretching definitely helps, and so will some back exercises.

Do you sleep late? I find that if i sleep early (~11) that back pain is a small issue for me.

You can buy a cheap tennis ball, they are the best things for self massages and getting really deep into the knots.
