bought a Canon,body only.

upgrading into better equipment and bought a A1 condition, body only:

so, lenses. for a general purpose kind of lense, i was thinking of going with this:

looks like it's in the $1k range, give or take. it's got the red ring of excellence, so what do you think? any other suggestions? (outdoor shots mostly)

The 24-105 is a decent walk about lens. At a constant f4, it is a little slow for low light situations. Just remember that the 1DmkII N is an APS-H sensor so you need to multiply the focal length by 1.3x. The lens will not be as wide as it is on a full frame camera.

Outdoor like landscapes? Maybe something wider like 17-40 L?

I second the 17-40 f4L suggestion. It served me well on my 20D and now onto full-frame duty on my 5D.

Out of all my lenses I use it the most...that is, until I jump up to the 16-35 f2.8L

16-35 isn't worth it imo unless you need that extra stop of light.
