Want a new doggy!

Hey Everyone

Need some help here. I want a doggy but don't know which one to get. I currently have a shih tzu but I'm moving out so I'm going to let my parents keep him.

I want a dog that stays small and still huggable and most important doesnt shed. I don't want those toy dogs because i'm scared I might step on him/her.

Any suggestions?

start checking www.spca.bc.ca on the daily for puppies.

i got my terrier puppy last year from up north somewhere and it cost under $300 for everything including his flight down here and reimbursement for his neutering. 99% of the puppies will be in some town up north. there is nothing in the gvrd.

Use Petfinder. It will search the SPCA as well as all the other rescue orgs close to you. There is a lot more than just the SPCA out there.

BUT if you're just now moving out, and you're going to be renting, I recommend you wait a few years until you settle down. Dogs live a long time and it's irresponsible to take one on if you don't know what your circomstances will be in a year or two. If you do adopt a dog now, make sure your parents are willing to take him/her in should you find yourself in a position where your land lord says you can't keep him, you have to move into a place that you can't have dogs, ect.

Maybe taking your current dog with you would be the best idea?

^This is very good advice. Remember that a lot of rentals don't allow pets at all.

If you still think you want to find one right away, check out this event:

Quote:
Little Dog Rescue!! All of Lisa's rescue dogs come from high rate kill shelters in California. Pepper had 12 hours left when Lisa picked him up. They are all fantastic little guys that need forever homes. Lisa will bring some of them out to meet us on Sunday October 24th at 1pm. Come by and see these adorable little guys!
This is happening at Clayton Critters in Cloverdale, NE corner of 188th St. and 68th Ave. If you're on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=155290504510204

Dogs will shed from time to time, just that dogs with black coat will be much noticeable than a lighter coat. Depends on the food you feed your pet aswell though. I'm using EVO and my dog still sheds quite a bit. Gonna try moving on to a raw diet to see if that will help. Do you want a house dog? do you want it to be hyper?

I have a miniature pinscher and i've never stepped on her, just cause shes so jumpy and always moving around, so you know where she is at all times

Not all dogs shed. We have two Pomeranian x Yorkie crosses, and one that's a mix of toy poodle, miniature dachshund and Pomeranian, and none of them have shed a single hair.

Plus, how noticeable a given hair color is depends on the color of what they're shedding on. We used to have a black and white cat who was highly skilled in being able to shed black hair on white/light surfaces, and white hair onto black/dark surfaces.

Why do I look at adoptables when I'm not supposed to?

This guy is sooo friggin' cute:

Some breed were breed to not shred. Generally dogs that don't shred need their hair to be trim from time to time

Soundy, are you familiar with Lisa's and Clayton's?

Lisa and her husband are friend's from way back. Last year I ran into them and they were moving from their small dog daycare in New West to a new place in Langley. Looks like she's stepped it up and is getting really involved in animal rescues.

Thx for all the advice everyone!
I was researching and came across a Maltipoo and they are so cute! The biggest they get is 8-12 lbs I believe.
I defiantly will check out the SPCA site. I'm still open on all options of dogs at this point. I don't think I will be getting one soon but in the near future. I'm not renting as I just purchased a new house so having a dog in the house won't be a problem.

Good choice, we have one and they are hypoallergenic and non shedding.
IF you can not find one at the SPCA, check with breeders.
We bought ours from a breeder in 100 Mile house. They came down to deliver him. My wife researched it for over a year. Average price starts around $500 and goes up. DO NOT buy from a pet store, our neighbour bought a maltese puppy from a store in Richmond and paid over $1500.

You can also check out Furbaby Rescue. They are based out of Washington, but they will bring dogs across to homes in BC.

how big do Multipoo's get? anywhere between 5-12lbs?
Oh that was nice of the breeder to do that. I'm looking on Kijiji everyday to see what else is out there. How did you find your breeder?

We got our guys from the NOAH shelter in Washington State. It is an ASPCA shelter and the facility is amazing. Our two chihuahuas Ronnie and Verona were both dogs from California high kill shelters and they (NOAH) bring them up so they can be adopted here. They've only been living with us for a week and they already are acting like they run the house. When I spoke to everyone at the shelter, they said they primarily bring in small dogs. Only thing is that the dogs aren't in the shelter for a long time so you have to act quickly. (But that is a good thing after all)

There's a poodle and small animal rescue in Victoria as well

http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/BC183.html

Like I said if you use petfinder you will get ALL of the rescues with in how ever far you like.

Keep your current dog. It just sounds like you get bored, and toss them out and get a new puppy every couple years.

We love the Clayton dog park and visit Clayton Critters all the time!

We just met Lisa this past weekend, when she brought two of her rescues to Clayton. Our neighbor recently had to put her dog down, so we took her out to Lisa's place to meet Ricky the cockapoo... unfortunately I don't think she'll be taking Ricky, as she thinks he's too old and seems to be deaf (I'm not too sure of that, our pups play deaf all the time). Lisa's vet says Ricky is 5-6 years, but our friend seems to think he's at least 10... somehow I'm more inclined to believe the vet's opinion. Almost wish I had the room to take Ricky in, he was so chill and just seems to really need a home where he can have some fun.

Have you ever thought of a whippet. They make great companions. They are sprinters so a good 45min walk a day and they are happy.
