| powder coating rims
i know its been covered before but not for a while. so i finally dismantled my bbs rm 012 and bought new 1.5 lips. what i need is a place that will media blast the barrel and the powder coat it. i want a 1 stop shop. some powder coaters dont have media blasting on site. can anyone recomend a shop that can do both? also whats the usual cost per wheel? thanks

panthers in surrey
great guys but they are really slow. they quote me 2 days to get work done and end up taking close to 3 weeks. but the result was quite good, not perfect though. i would give them A-

heard good things about them but havn't use them yet for anything. they did quote me a price that was 3x the amount panther quoted me. Don't know if their work is actually 3 times better than panthers

I know people that have used Rainbow Powder coating in Coquitlam,I have seen their work and it looks top notch.

^ only problem I ran into with Rainbow is that the guy works by himself, and pretty much works whatever hours he wants. Twice I made appointments to meet him but he took off for home already according to the shop next door.

i heard painting the rims is a better option then powder coating because paint holds up better. can anyone confirm this?

Not true.
Firstly, powder coat IS paint. Think of it this way...paint you are thinking of in a can is just a pigment suspended in a liquid solution. Powder coat is utilizing only the pigment in pure powder form and making it stick through electrostatic charge.
Powdercoat is more resilient because it adheres to the aluminum better (One of the processes in powdercoating is a chemical bath which etches the surface of the aluminum). It still scratches though.
That said, powdercoating is far superior in chip resistance, chemical resistance, and corrosion resistance, than any wet paint applications.

Except PCing may affect rigidity of the wheels. There have been cases where PCed wheels fail during track session. They shouldn't pose any problems if street driven though.

That would be due to the painter not knowing / figuring out the material of the rim. Aluminum alloy is soft and you cannot apply too much heat, there are more than one type of alloy being used, it is important for the painter to figure out which one the rim is. Quote:

I brought a set of Work VS-XX in for sand-blasting and powder coating, the guy quoted me 10 days, and I ended up getting the wheels back after 2 months. The quality is top notch, but the wait is quite long.

The best powder coater I've used (for tons of bbs rm's) was the rainbow dude but yes he's difficult at times. I always blasted my own wheels tho.

He could buy a $50 PC kit off Ebay, and stick the wheels in his oven. Not sure how the good the finish would be though..

Curbage happens, unless you're a c'lai holding up traffic for 10 mins while trying to parallel park without hitting the curb.
